The Cloze Procedure as a Test of Plagiarism: The Influence of Text Readability

Abstract: The authors investigated whether scores on the Cloze procedure as a test of plagiarism would be significantly affected by the readability of text. Undergraduates were asked to either paraphrase or plagiarize legal documents. Approximately half of the participants in the paraphrase condition received documents that were difficult to read, whereas the other half received versions that were easy to read. About 2 weeks later, participants completed Cloze tests that were based on their rewritten paraphrased or plag… Show more

“…To measure the effectiveness of perception, we look at the respondents' recall of the product information. As used in other research studies, recall of the presented information provides an indirect indicator of the respondents' information processing (Taylor, 1957;Torres and Roig, 2005). We opted specifically for this proven measurement method and not for a direct inquiry for the ease of information processing to avoid directing the focus of the respondents to information processing and thus possibly causing a major bias in the results.…”

“…After a few filler tasks, the test persons were presented with the product description previously shown in the form of a gap text and asked to enter the missing terms correctly. This method serves as a common approach from psychological research to measure participants' recall of a certain stimulus (Taylor, 1957;Torres and Roig, 2005). Subsequently, the subjects were finally asked to provide sociodemographic data, and they were thanked and debriefed.…”

“…An additional benefit to instructors using this method is that it should reduce concerns about academic dishonesty and plagiarism, an increasing problem in undergraduate institutions due to the abundance of readily available and accessible online resources in which information can be copied directly onto manuscripts. Further, there are many Internet sites which provide custom essays and papers for a fee (Kakkonen & Mozgovoy, 2010;Torres & Roig, 2005;Williams, Nathanson, & Paulhus, 2010). As student blogs are based entirely on their own personal experience, they are much less likely to copy another's work.…”

“…This is known as the Cloze test, and assumes that a student who is familiar with the concepts of the written work will much more easily fill in the missing words than one who is not. Poor recall of missing words is a sign of a lack of understanding and thus a pointer to plagiarism (Torres and Roig 2005). Of course, these are quite time consuming activities for both faculty and students.…”
