Clinical signs and symptoms of peripheral nerve dysfunction can frequently be correlated with abnormalities of conduction in groups of large motor and sensory nerve fibres'-" particularly if results from populations of patients (for example mean motor nerve conduction velocity) are contrasted with data from large numbers of normal subjects. When using standard techniques to study individual patients, however, one often finds the values for maximal motor and sensory conduction velocity to be within the normal range in a number of patients who have obvious clinical features of polyneuropathy. In order to improve the diagnostic yield of electrophysiological studies in individual patients with various peripheral neuropathies, we have studied the efficacy of two easily elicitable late responses, the F-response, which can be recorded from almost any skeletal muscle, and the H-reflex, which can be easily recorded from the soleus muscle. These two simple, reproducible physiolcgical responses were studied to evaluate conduction along the course of the whole "final common pathway", from the motoneurone to the terminal axon, as well as (in the case of the H-reflex) to gain some information regarding

Zusammenfassung Nach einer Einführung in die Elektromyographie wird die Problematik dieser Methode bei der Untersuchung von Tieren und die Möglichkeit, die Elektromyographie in der Tierklinik nutzbringend einzusetzen, diskutiert. Für die elektromyographische Untersuchung von Hunden werden zwei Techniken aufgezeigt, nämlich Ableitung von Einheitspotentialen aus reflektorisch durch Dehnung aktivierten Skeletmuskeln und Ableitung vom belasteten Muskel am stehenden Tier. Modellhaft werden von sechs Beagles im Wachzustand, von sieben Beagles in Neuroleptanalgesia und von sechs Deutschen Schäferhunden in Neuroleptanalgesia Aktionspotentiale motorischer Einheiten des reflektorisch durch Dehnung aktivierten Musculus pectineus abgeleitet. Dauer, Amplitude und Phasenzahl der registrierten Einheitspotentiale werden ausgemessen, und die Daten der genannten drei Gruppen miteinander verglichen. Das verwendete Neuroleptanalgeticum beeinflußt die Meßwerte nicht. Beagles‐ und Schäferhund‐Werte unterscheiden sich signifikant. Bei einer Gruppe von sieben Appenzeller‐Schäferhundbastarden wird der M. triceps brachii oberflächlich sedierter, stehender Hunde elektromyographisch untersucht. An vier narkotisierten Beagles wird die Bestimmung der Erregungsleitungsgeschwindigkeit motorischer Fasern der Gliedmaßennerven demonstriert. Summary A contribution to electronmyography in veterinary medicine After introducing the subject the author discusses the problems associated with this technique and the possibility of its useful introduction into the animal clinic. Two techniques are suited to electromyographical studies in dogs: derivation of unit potentials by reflection from stretching activated skeletal muscles and derivation from stretched muscles of the standing animal. As a model, six awake Beagles, seven Beagles in a state of neuroleptic analgesia and six Alsatians in neuroleptic analgesia were used to study the action potentials of motor units reflected by stretching the activated pectineus muscle. Duration, amplitude and phase number of the unit potentials registered were measured and the data from the three groups of dogs were compared. The neuroleptic analgesia used did not affect the results. Values for the Beagles and the Alsatians differed significantly. In a group of seven Appenzeller‐Alsatian crosses the triceps brachii muscle was examined superficially with the dogs sedated and standing. In four narcotized Beagles the rate of conduction of excitation along the motor fibres of the limb nerves was measured. A collision method in a single axon was used to determine the origin of 100 fasciculations in various lower motor neuron lesions. For 80% of the fasciculations, it was situated on the distal extremity of the axon regardless of the type of lesion, its duration, or the severity of the denervation. For several reasons, this proportion is underestimated. The fasciculations of distal origin were sometimes, associated with double discharges, the mechanism of production and clinical significance of which probably differ.
