The clinical utility of Memorial Symptom Assessment‐Short Form and Condensed Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale in Turkish lung cancer patients

Abstract: Introduction: Symptom assessment is essential in the palliative care of patients with cancer. We studied the Memorial Assessment Scale Test-Short Form (MSAS-SF) and Condensed Memorial Assessment Test (CMSAS) in Turkish lung cancer patients. Material and Method: Fifty-one patients with lung cancer (47 non-small, 4 small cell) were staged according to the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer 2007 and filled the MSAS-SF. Karnofsky performance status, TNM staging, MSAS-SF and CMSAS scores were re… Show more

“…These results are similar to the finding that MSAS-SF subscale scores are significantly correlated with advanced cancer stage patients with lung cancer according to tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) stage. 16 Despite differences in the measurement of cancer stage (TNM vs. FIGO stage), MSAS-SF score was appropriate to cancer stage differences. Moreover, MSAS-SF scores differed by KPS group in our study.…”

“…15 The MSAS-SF assesses 32 symptoms with distress for physical symptoms and frequency of psychological symptoms, with subscales for global distress, physical symptom distress, psychological symptom distress, and total MSAS (TMSAS) score. The reliability and validity of MSAS-SF has been shown in the U.S., 15 Turkey, 16 China, 17 and U.K. 18 and for patients with various cancer types, including lung, 16 colorectal, 17 advanced soft tissue sarcoma, 19 and germ cell tumors. 20 The validity of MSAS-SF has been previously demonstrated in English, 15 Chinese, 17 and Spanish.…”

“…The MSAS instrument was developed for oncology patients to gauge patient‐reported symptom profiles inclusive of each symptom's severity, frequency, and associated distress 22 . The validity, reliability, and responsiveness of the MSAS has been repeatedly demonstrated for evaluating symptom patterns experienced by cancer patients, including end‐of‐life symptomotology 23–28 . The original MSAS was notably developed for adult cohorts, requiring revisions for versatile and developmentally appropriate symptom assessments in pediatric patients with cancer 29,30 .…”
