“…In driving force for promoting research in the clinical setting addition, the clinical nurse researcher role has been added (Smeltzer&Hinshaw, 1988). Departments of nursing have to service settings to facilitate developing and directmg clinical research programmes (Hagle et al., 1986). The structure of clinical research programmes (MacKay et al., 1984;Marchette, 1985;Lawson, 1987;Smeltzer & Hinshaw, 1988;Keefe & Biester, 1988) and the role of the clinical nurse researcher (Cronenwett, 1986;Knafl et al, 1987;Lawson, 1988) are well documented in the nursing literature.…”

“…Of 12 studies deemed to meet the inclusion criteria, ten were conducted using qualitative methodology and two using mixed methodology (see Table 2). Six studies (11,17,23,24,25,26) were interview studies, three (15,16,27) used surveys, one (28) was a collective case study with written cases, while one of the two ‘mixed methodology’ studies (12) combined interviews with questionnaires and the other (29) combined interviews with a literature review. The number of participating informants in the different studies ranged from 5 to 166 (except for one case study that had three participants).…”

Five studies were conducted in the US (16,25,26,27,29), two in Australia (12,24), two in Denmark (23,28), one in Sweden (17), one in the Netherlands (11) and one in a combination of Nordic countries (15).…”

“…The samples for both studies were drawn from the members of the Nurse Researchers Employed in Clinical Settings, a subgroup of the American Nurses Association Council of Nurse Researchers (Notter, 1972) which no longer exists. In the first study, 37 NRs were identified who met criteria of at least half-time employment as an NR in a clinical agency for at least 6 months (Hagle, Kirchhoff, Knafl, & Bevis, 1986;Knafl, Bevis, & Kirchhoff, 1987a, 1987b. Thirty-four NRs agreed to participate and were surveyed by telephone about their role and the organization in which they worked.…”
