The clinical impact of [18F]FDG PET/CT for the management of recurrent endometrial cancer: correlation with clinical and histological findings

Abstract: Integrated PET/CT appears to be highly sensitive, specific, and accurate as a post-therapy surveillance modality for endometrial cancer in well-selected patients. The PET/CT might be used to improve patient surveillance and prognosis.

“…Most patients are diagnosed at early-stage disease with the overall 5-year survival rates of 84% [1]. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) utilizing [ 18 F]fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) has been recommended for the diagnosis, staging, therapy monitoring, prediction of prognosis, and detection of recurrence in endometrial cancer [3,4,5]. …”

“…They showed that pre-operatively, PET/CT detected lymph node metastasis with 69% sensitivity and 90% specificity. According to other studies for the detection of recurrent disease, 80,81 PET/CT had excellent performance with 100% sensitivity and 83-100% specificity. The use of PET/CT has been shown to detect recurrences even in asymptomatic women with 100% sensitivity and specificity, 81 and can provide important prognostic information for women after primary treatment.…”

“…79 PET/CT provides the synergistic benefits of morphologic and molecular imaging because of localization of increased FDG uptake with anatomical specificity. 80 Substantial evidence has now emerged documenting the role of PET/CT in the management of uterine corpus cancer patients, at the pre-operative evaluation as well as at the posttreatment surveillance (Table 6). 32,80,81 Park et al 32 performed a retrospective comparison of surgical staging with PET/CT in 53 uterine corpus cancer patients.…”

“…According to Chung et al [16], PET/CT in detection of recurrent endometrial ca has an accuracy of 92.3 %, and allowed changing treatment modality in 22.6 % patients. In our study, a case of operated ca vulva, on follow-up, showed CT scan of recurrence in lung but PET-CT was normal, allowing changing further modality.…”
