The Clinical Efficacy of Kinesio Tape for Shoulder Pain: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Clinical Trial

Abstract: Shoulder pain is a very common musculoskeletal complaint, and individuals with shoulder pain comprise a significant percentage of patients seeking medical attention. Lifetime prevalence of shoulder pain has been reported to range from 7% to 36% of the population.11,13 Rotator cuff pathology and subacromial impingement are among the most common diagnoses made in the shoulder region.

“…In this study no reduction of pain for the KT group compared to the no-KT group was demonstrated. Other studies performed are in agreement with these findings [25,26]. The results of this study show patients scored moderate pain or less in both groups (VAS \ 5) for all measurement times.…”

“…Shoulder taping is believed to help reduce pain and restore normal functionality 58 [Lewis et al, 2005, Thelen et al, 2008. However, its use is mostly based on 59 anecdotal observations [Kase, 2003] and there is little evidence to support the 60 benefits and efficacy of taping [Williams et al, 2012].…”

“…The locator was used by an experienced observer to obtain a continuous measure of presented in the literature [Ackermann et al, 2002, Hsu et al, 2009 2005, Thelen et al, 2008]. Given that the objective of this study was to investigate 155 whether taping affects scapular kinematics, a taping technique that was specifically 156 developed to correct the scapular position has been employed.…”

“…[3] Sports taping is a muscle facilitation technique widely used in sport and rehabilitation for the prevention of injury and the improvement of muscle function. [10] The kinesio-taping (KT) method, which is becoming increasingly popular, claims to provide support and stability to joints and muscles while at the same time aiding in pain free range of motion. [10] Depending on how the KT is applied to the skin, various benefits were proposed, including alignment of fascia, stimulation according to the position of tape on the skin and the provision of specific sensory stimulation to the tissues in order to assist or limit movement.…”
