The Clinical Characteristics of Neonatal Sepsis Infection in Southwest China

Abstract: Objective To identify the pathogens responsible for neonatal sepsis in a high-volume women and children's hospital in Southwest China. Methods We retrospectively studied 133 neonates who were admitted to the West China Women and Children's Hospital between 2008 and 2012 for sepsis. The clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded, and the antibiotic sensitivities of the isolated bacteria were determined. Results All of the included patients had clinical symptoms of sepsis, and subsequent blood cultur… Show more

“…Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) is reported as the main pathogen of LOS [10][11][12]. However, the spectrum of pathogens varies among different regions and may change over time in the same place [13,14]. The investigation of organisms causing LOS and the monitoring of their antimicrobial sensitivity can be used to guide appropriate empirical treatment and help develop cost effective interventions to prevent neonatal deaths.…”

“…Similar results were also found in several studies of previous neonatal sepsis. 8,9,14 Early-onset neonatal sepsis is caused by vertical transmission of bacteria from mother to fetus during the antenatal and intranatal period, while LONS is associated with the horizontal transmission of postnatally acquired pathogens. This transmission can occur due to risk factors for infection and lack of knowledge and awareness of pregnant women about danger signs such as fever and premature rupture of membrane.…”

“…In present study Gram-positive organisms had most sensitivity to vancomycin (84%) and linezolid (82%), which is comparable with a study in Karnataka, India which depicted 100% sensitivity from vancomycin and linezolid. 15,16 Sensitivity to teicoplanin (58%), piperacillin-tazobactam (42%), and fosfomycin (40%). Highest resistance was noted from Amoxyclav (52%).…”
