The clinical adoption meta-model: a temporal meta-model describing the clinical adoption of health information systems

Abstract: Health information systems (HISs) hold the promise to transform health care; however, their adoption is challenged. We have developed the Clinical Adoption Meta-Model (CAMM) to help describe processes and possible challenges with clinical adoption. The CAMM, developed through an action research study to evaluate a provincial HIS, is a temporal model with four dimensions: availability, use, behaviour changes, and outcome changes. Seven CAMM archetypes are described, illustrating classic trajectories of adoption… Show more

“…The last of the four best papers from Meeks and colleagues [14] analyzed EHR-related patient safety concerns and reminds us on this old truth. Although not able to solve this problem, one candidate paper by Price and Lau proposes a very interesting meta-model to at least help describing processes and possible challenges in clinical adoption of health information systems over time [15]. Also not a solution for the problem, but a very interesting compilation of systematically collected barriers and critical success factors for CIS in integrated care settings is presented in the this year's CIS survey by Hoerbst and Schweitzer [16].…”

“…We will use the clinical adoption meta-model (CAMM)54 as a framework to organise and make sense of the umbrella review findings. The CAMM is a maturity model used to understand, describe and explain the introduction, use and effects of eHealth systems over time.…”

“…Fourth, we will apply the CERQual criteria to determine the confidence in the evidence synthesised from aggregative reviews that include qualitative primary studies. Fifth, we will apply the CAMM54 to organise and make sense of the umbrella review findings.…”

“…To complement the dimensions, the TBPCC framework includes an adoption model ( Fig. 2), adapted from the Clinical Adoption Meta Model (27). This encourages thinking on the evolution of indicators over time from measuring baseline and early intention to change through to observable behaviour changes to longterm outcomes.…”
