The climatic patterning of Sphagnum sect. Sphagnum species distribution in the East European Plain

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to correlate distribution of Sphagnum species with local climatic factors in the East European Plain. Six species of Sphagnum from section Sphagnum, i.e., S. magellanicum, S. centrale, S. palustre, S. papillosum, S. austinii, and S. affine were selected. The graded data on their abundance and the species number for 138 localities were mapped into unit squares of 1010 km by using GRID coverage, to construct several delineated zones of occurence/ abundance. For analysis, the matr… Show more

“…This paper continues a study of the spatial patterning of the Sphagnum species distribution by climatic factors in the East European Plain. The previous paper dealt with the species of the section Sphagnum (Popov, 2016), while the present one addresses to the section Acutifolia. The study territory is somewhat expanded here so to cover the territory of Finland (Fig.…”

“…The general patterns of the spatial variation of climatic fac tors in the study area were set out by us earlier (Popov 2016). In brief, they consist in the fact that the western re gions during the growing season are cha rac terized by a much greater amount of precipitation than the central and eas tern ones, which is due to the patterns of move ment of At lan tic cyclones from west to east.…”

“…covering several natural zones), climate exerts the dominant influence on species' dis tri bution (Woodwart 1987) and the main climatic factors of species' distribution, i.e. monthly and annual temperature averages, precipitation, humidity and others, might be considered as leading (Gignac & Vitt 1990, Gignac et al 1991, Melosik 2006, Séneca & Söderström 2008, Popov 2016.…”

“…Some dots have been chosen outside the area of interest (e.g. Romania, Poland, Kazakhstan, Caucasus, the eastern mountainside of the Urals) to correct possible errors of extrapolation at the area boundaries (Demyanov & Savelyeva, 2010;Popov, 2016). We applied the basic principles of area modelling, using geostatistics methods and analysing the distribution range of the moss species by using the kriging method published previously (Popov, 2017).…”
