The climate of Aldabra Atoll

Abstract: Meteorological observations made by members of the expedition since August 1967 are the first to appear from Aldabra which cover a sufficient time span to merit analysis. Data for the period November 1967 to October 1968 are compared with marine derived parameters available from climatological atlases. Aldabra experiences a 5- or 6-month wet season in most years and its climate may be classified as V 2 /V 3 . During midsummer 1967/8 a marked positive pressure ano… Show more

“…For all landbirds on Aldabra, reproduction is closely tied to the wet NW monsoon (Benson and Penny 1971). Variable timing and amount of rainfall means that in some years rains may be late andlor far below average (Farrow, 1971;Betts, 2000). An ability to store large reserves of energy (fat) at times of abundance would be advantageous in surviving the long, dry, SE monsoon and allow birds to achieve breeding condition early in the wet season.…”

“…This large (34 x 14.5 km), raised atoll in the Indian Ocean (9°24'N, 45°20'S) consists of a narrow rim of Pleistocene limestones (Braithwaite et al, 1973) surrounding a shallow central lagoon. Farrow (1971) reported that summer maximum temperatures at a site not far from the location of the present study reach 32°C, and winter minimum temperature is 22°C. Aldabra lies in the most arid sector of the Indian Ocean, with a mean annual rainfall of 673 mm (Farrow, 1971).…”
