The clients’ perspective on change during treatment for an alcohol problem: qualitative analysis of follow‐up interviews in the UK Alcohol Treatment Trial

Abstract: Models of change should be broadened so that treatment is seen as a complex system of parts, facilitating a nexus of cognitive, social and behavioural changes, embedded within a broader system of events and processes catalysing change. Such a model helps explain the relative absence of between-treatments outcome differences in UKATT and in the alcohol problems treatment and more general psychotherapy research literatures.

“…However, research on substance use by clients without the comorbidity of mental illness indicates that social support is important to changing behaviour successfully [25,26]. Clients claim that they benefit from interventions that address their multiple recovery issues as opposed to ones that emphasize recovery strictly in sobriety terms [27].…”

“…Part of the authors' rationale for this work was the suggestion that regular checkups might be beneficial, and the very word 'check-up' in the name of their method suggests that research followups might in themselves be effective. Certainly some of our participants in the UK Alcohol Treatment Trial thought so [5]. However, Scott & Dennis's results suggest that the thoughtful, protocol-led work of re-engaging participants with treatment, if that were necessary, had significant effects beyond the check-up itself.…”
