“…Its southeasterly motion has remained steady ever since (Freymueller and Kellogg). As a result of this subduction, the Baudo-Panama island arc collided with South America in middle Miocene times ( Duque-Caro, 1990) and the CO was uplifted during the ensuing Andean orogenic phase ( Colletta; Schamel; Cooper and Taboada).…”

“…It's likely that the formation of several arches and the orogeny of the Merida Andes could have helped to isolate Amazon and Orinoco capybara populations as well as capybara populations within of the Orinoco drainage Basin. El Baul Arch (although the uplift structures created by this arch are transient and migrated across time; [130]) and the Arauca Arch (in the Apuré area, which may be the northern extension of a large arch located in the Colombian Llanos Orinoco Basin, which has not yet reported) could have uplifted around 8-5 MYA (Late Miocene-Pliocene). Also the Merida Arch (related with the isolation of the Maracaibo drainage Basin around 10-8 MYA [115,131]), could play an important part in creating barriers within the Orinoco Basin responsible for the molecular heterogeneity of the capybara in this area.…”
