In the Guateque-Medina area, Paleozoic basement and Mesozoic rift basins have been uplifted and exhumed during the Andean orogeny (12 Ma to present). Surface exposures and subsurface data constrain the deformation style and the rift geometry. We have mapped a regional transect and restored a cross section. We have also reconciled existing stratigraphic data, from cordillera, foothills and foreland basin, and have added new data of our own. In Early Cretaceous shales, there is evidence for fault-controlled sedimentation. A brecciated evaporitic layer, which is locally emerald bearing, has acted as a regional detachment. The underlying basement, composed of Paleozoic sediments, crops out as the Quetame Massif. It was uplifted during the Andean orogeny on a series of high-angle reverse faults. The main SE-verging Tesalia fault has resulted from Andean reactivation of an Early Cretaceous normal fault, which bounded a half-rift. A series of NW-verging back-thrusts may have resulted from Andean reactivation of Paleozoic faults. Between the back-thrusts and the Tesalia fault is a basement pop-up. It may be part of a flower structure, because components of right-lateral slip have been identified. These are attributed to eastward subduction of the Nazca plate beneath South America. In general, the style and timing of Andean deformation in the Guateque-Medina area are compatible with the plate tectonic setting of the northern Andes.

The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochoeris) is the largest rodent on the world and it is strongly linked to the river systems of a large fraction of South America and part of Central America (Panama). Thus, it is an interesting species to test hypotheses about the origin of the high biodiversity within the Amazon Basin and in a sizeable fraction of the Neotropics. To test these hypotheses, we sequenced two mitochondrial genes (control region and Cytochrome b) of 78 wild capybaras sampled in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. At least, five different "populations" or ESUs were detected in well delimited geographical areas. However, our results do not support the more recent view that two different species of capybara are present (H. hydrochoeris and H. isthmus), unless chromosomal speciation (stasipatric or parapatric) can be demonstrated between these two groups. A Bayesian tree with the aforementioned two mitochondrial genes, and another Bayesian tree with a subset of 25 capybaras for 10 mitochondrial genes, showed that the initial diversification of the mitochondrial haplotype in capybaras was initiated in the Late Miocene. The trees also showed that the other haplotype diversification processes extended into the Pliocene and Pleistocene. We also detected population expansion events during different moments of the Pleistocene. Although some authors strongly suggest that the Miocene diversification explains the extreme biodiversity in the Amazon Basin and in surroundings areas (for instance, the Paleogeography hypothesis), others consider it the result of available forest refugia (Refuge hypothesis) during the Pleistocene. However, our results suggest that both hypotheses (and others, such as the Riverrefuge, the Recent Lagoon and the Hydrogeological Recent Change hypotheses) could have affected the evolution of the capybara to generate the current mitochondrial diversity. Thus, it is difficult to generalize a unique Amazon biota diversification hypothesis because each species or taxon could be affected by different processes and because the temporal antiquity of each taxon in South America is also different. Many mammalian taxa, and others, migrated into South America during the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI) and their diversification processes in South America were mainly driven by Pleistocene events as those proposed by the Refuge hypothesis. Older taxa within this continent could have begun their current genetics diversification processes earlier, such as in the case of the capybara.

RESUMENEn el noroccidente colombiano, dentro del contexto de la orogenia Andina, se han desarrollado importantes fallas activas, que afectan secuencias turbidíticas de la Formación Penderisco, en el eje de la Cordillera Occidental, las cuales presentan actividad y grado de amenaza sísmica alto/moderado para esta región. Este trabajo utiliza la tomografía de resistividad eléctrica con el fin de evaluar la capacidad del método en la delineación y configuración de estructuras menores asociadas a la Falla Abriaquí. A partir de la realización de líneas geoeléctricas transversales a la Falla Abriaquí y la obtención de imágenes tomográficas de resistividad eléctrica en dos localidades, mediante el método Dipolo-Dipolo, se infiere una alta correspondencia entre la distribución espacial de la resistividad eléctrica obtenida y las ideas propuestas a partir de indicadores morfotectónicos, y en particular entre la configuración inferida de la Falla Abriaquí a partir de la resistividad y los modelos 2D elaborados para cada locación con base en criterios geomorfológicos.Palabras clave: Tomografía de resistividad eléctrica (ERT), Dipolo-Dipolo, Falla Abriaquí, método de inversión de mínimos cuadrados, tectónica activa. Such faults are currently active and generate a high/moderate degree of seismic hazard in this region. In this work we use the electrical resistivity tomography method to evaluate its ability to delineate minor structures and to identify displaced blocks associated with the Abriaquí Fault. Electrical tests were carried out in a perpendicular direction to the Abriaqui Fault, obtaining tomographic images of electrical resistivity at two different locations using the Dipole-Dipole method. From the results we infer a high correspondence between the obtained spatial distribution of resistivity and the previous ideas of the underground configuration based on geomorphic and tectonic criteria. In particular, the inferred configuration of the Abriaquí Fault from electrical resistivity is highly consistent with the 2D models previously proposed.
