Project BP.A.T.H.S.^has been shown to be effective in promoting positive development outcomes among Chinese adolescents in the school context. However, little is known whether the benefits can also be found in other settings. The purposes of the study was to investigate the changes in psychosocial outcomes among Hong Kong Chinese adolescents after participating in a community-based positive youth development (PYD) program. Using a one-group pretest-posttest design, junior high school students (N = 17,544) were invited to join the universal prevention program (the Tier 1 Program) and/or the selective prevention program (the Tier 2 Program). 10,807 students whose pre-and post-test data were successfully matched. The students responded to validated outcome measures assessing PYD outcomes, life satisfaction and thriving at pretest and posttest. Consistent with the hypotheses, students showed positive change on different developmental outcomes after joining the program. Amongst the different programs, students in the Tier 2 Program had significant improvement in all developmental outcome indicators. While limitations of the one-group pretest-posttest design and the alternative explanations are duly acknowledged, the present study suggests that the community-based Project P.A.T.H.S. is a promising approach to promote positive youth development, life satisfaction and thriving of adolescents, a conclusion which is consistent with the existing evaluation findings of the project. Building from previous school-based research, the present study extends the literature by showing the effectiveness of a positive youth prevention program in a community context. Limitations of the study design (e.g., an absence of a control group) are discussed.Applied Research Quality Life

General Education Learning Outcomes and Demographic Correlates in University Students in Hong Kong

Although there are studies showing that higher education would benefit university students, empirical research that comprehensively assesses student general education learning outcomes and related demographic correlates based on longitudinal data is minimal, especially in the Chinese context. To address the research gaps, the present study was conducted to investigate learning outcomes amongst university students in one university in Hong Kong based on a four-year longitudinal design (N = 460). Four dimensions of student general education learning outcomes were measured, including effective reasoning and problem solving, leadership, moral character, and integration of learning. Results suggested a U-shaped pattern of student learning outcomes for most dimensions, with no improvement or even a decrement in the second year and a steady growth thereafter. While family background did not affect student development, gender showed a significant moderating effect on students' development in two dimensions (i.e., effective reasoning and problem solving, and integration of learning). These findings suggest that students benefit from general education-embedded university study in multiple dimensions, especially after the first year of transition period. Practical implications of the findings and future research directions were also discussed.Applied Research Quality Life

Adolescent Consumption of Pornographic Materials: Prevalence and Psychosocial Correlates Based on a Longitudinal Study

In this study, prevalence and psychosocial correlates of consumption of pornographic materials in Chinese adolescents were examined over 4 years. Results showed that adolescent consumption of pornographic materials generally increased throughout the junior secondary school years. Compared with that of traditional pornographic materials, adolescent consumption of pornographic materials on the Internet was higher. Growth curve analyses showed that age was related to initial level of pornography consumption and gender was related to growth trajectory of the consumption; family intactness also infl uenced growth rate in consumption of pornography on the Internet. Initial level of pornography consumption in early adolescence, gender, positive youth development qualities, and family functioning also predicted consumption of pornographic materials in middle adolescence. The present fi ndings suggested that positive youth development and family functioning are protective factors for adolescent consumption of pornographic materials.
