The Chinese herbal preparation Qing Yi Tang (QYT) improves intestinal myoelectrical activity and Increases intestinal transit during acute pancreatitis in Rodents

Abstract: The aim was to investigate alterations of intestinal motility in models of acute pancreatitis and to investigate the effects of the Chinese herbal preparation Qing Yi Tang (QYT) on these alterations. Upper gastrointestinal transit was evaluated in mice following induction of mild acute pancreatitis (MAP) using caerulein. Myoelectrical activity was recorded in rats after induction of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) using sodium deoxycholate (SDOC). The contractility of jejunum segments was evaluated in the pres… Show more

“…At the concentrations of LPS used in our study, pro‐inflammatory cytokines like TNF‐α and IL‐6 are increased and additionally the histological changes support that pro‐inflammatory mechanisms are activated by LPS 41–43 . In addition to the observed effects on myoelectrical activity and on upper GI transit, most of the LPS effects seem to be systemic effects including fever, hypotension, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and metabolic abnormalities, and these are known in animals and humans 20,27,44,45 …”

“…Different myoelectrical patterns can be recorded from GI tissue, and slow wave activity and spontaneous SA are amongst them 29,30 . Even though it is not completely understood how these myoelectrical patterns influence GI motility, it is never questioned, that they are one important level of regulation in GI motility 27 . In our study, we show that in vivo amplitudes and to a greater amount frequency of spontaneous SA are reduced following LPS treatment.…”

“…Myoelectrical activity of jejunum and colon in SD rats. Myoelectrical activity in jejunum and colon of SD rats were recorded according to the published procedures (Li et al, 2007;Lin et al, 2011) In brief, after fasting for 12 h with free access to tap water, SD rats were anesthetized with 20% ethylcarbamate (10 ml kg -1 ) by i.p. injection.…”

“…In contrast to western medicine, there is accumulating evidence suggestive of beneficial effects of plants used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and compounds isolated from medicinal plants [ 3 , 4 ]. The utilization of TCM shows good prospects in therapy of SAP since it has advantages of more extensive pharmacological effects and fewer adverse effects [ 5 , 6 ]. The aim of the present retrospective study was to clarify the validity of the Chinese Herbal Decoction, Huoxue Qingyi Decoction (HQD), in patients with SAP.…”
