“…In gonad, this ratio was significantly higher in C. varia (7.72) than in P. jacobaeus (5.33) and F. glaber (4.76); (p < 0.05). Dridi, Romdhane, and Elcafsi (2007) recorded lowest value of the gonad x3/x6 ratio (3.17) in the oyster C. gigas; however, in the scallop, Argopecten purpuratus, Caers et al (1999) recorded highest values of this ratio for adductor muscle (12.1), and male and female gonads (11.3 and 11.9, respectively). In edible meat of the clam Chamelea gallina, this ratio varies between 4.28 and 10.8 (Orban et al, 2006).…”

“…For example, it has been described that the female gonads of the molluscs Patella depressa (Pennant, 1777), Argopecten purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819), Haliotis rubra (Leach, 1814) and Haliotis laevigata (Donovan 1808) have higher levels of 14:0, 16:1n-7, 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 than the male gonads (Caers et al 1999;Grubert et al 2004;Morais et al 2003). The level of 20:4n-6 is usually similar in males and females but the content of 20:5n-3 diVers among species and, for example, is higher in the testes of P. depressa and H. rubra but lower in those of A. purpuratus (Caers et al, 1999;Grubert et al 2004;Morais et al 2003). In several species of Caprellidea, we have also reported higher percentages of 16:1n-7 and lower levels of 18:0, 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3 in females than in males (Guerra-García et al 2004).…”

“…Furthermore, when carbohydrate reserves are low, lipids are synthesized and stored for subsequent distribution to other tissues (Vassallo 1973;Thompson et al 1974). Similarities between the fatty acid composition of the triacylglyceride fraction (TAG) of the gonad and the digestive gland in the scallop Argopecten purpuratus demonstrate the transfer of lipids from the lipidrich digestive gland to the gonad for gametogenesis (Caers et al 1999). However, the digestive gland also plays a major role in the storage of lipids originating from phytoplankton (Soudant et al 1999).…”
