Doel van dit onderzoek was het verkrijgen van inzicht in moeilijke momenten die kinderen van chronisch zieke ouders meemaken in hun dagelijks leven. Bovendien is nagegaan of frequentie en beleving van deze moeilijke momenten significant bijdragen aan stress bij het kind, ook als gecontroleerd wordt voor de ernst van de ziekte van de ouder. Onderzoeksgroep en methode: 106 kinderen van patie¨nten met CVA (N = 29) en patie¨nten met de ziekte van Parkinson (N = 77) namen deel aan het onderzoek. De kinderen waren tussen de tien en 22 jaar oud (M = 15,9; SD = 2,8); 56 procent van de kinderen was een meisje. Vragenlijsten werden thuis ingevuld in aanwezigheid van een onderzoeker. Resultaten: kinderen die opgroeien met een chronisch zieke ouder maken regelmatig moeilijke momenten mee met betrekking tot hun zieke ouder, hun gezonde ouder, beide ouders in relatie tot elkaar en met betrekking tot hun persoonlijke leven. Het vaker meemaken van moeilijke momenten bleek samen te hangen met een negatievere beleving van deze momenten. Er werd een positief verband met stress gevonden voor alle moeilijke momenten. Meisjes ervoeren meer stress dan jongens, en kinderen van chronisch zieke vaders ervoeren meer stress dan kinderen van chronisch zieke moeders. Regressieanalyses toonden aan dat zowel frequentie als beleving van moeilijke momenten als sekse van het kind significant bijdroegen aan stress van het kind. Conclusie: kinderen van chronisch zieke ouders lopen het risico stress te ervaren door moeilijke momenten in hun dagelijks leven. Gevonden resultaten zijn in overeenstemming met de stresstheorie van Lazarus.
Inleiding'Geen gezamenlijke fietstochtjes meer, niet meer met het gezin uit eten, een gebrek aan knuffels en lichamelijk contact, zorgen om haar ouders en schaamte om vriendinnetjes mee naar huis te nemen ...' Zo omschrijft een kind van een patie¨nt met de ziekte van Parkinson (Rees, 2002) de invloed die de ziekte van haar moeder op haar leven heeft. Opgroeien in een gezin met een chronisch zieke ouder heeft verregaande implicaties voor een kind, op alle denkbare vlakken.Korneluk en Lee (1998) beschrijven in hun artikel 'Children's adjustment to parental physical illness' dat kinderen 1 van chronisch zieke ouders onder meer kampen met angst voor het verlies van de ouder, dat zij moeten leren omgaan met een verminderde beschikbaarheid van de zieke ouder (en vaak ook van hun gezonde ouder) en dat zij meer verantwoordelijkheden en (huishoudelijke) taken krijgen toegewezen. Vaak is er sprake van een vermindering in de beschikbare financie¨le middelen, van veranderingen -in negatieve zin -in het humeur van e´e´n of beide ouders en zijn kinderen getuige van een veranderende relatie tussen hun ouders. Armsden en Lee (1993) wijzen daarnaast op de mogelijke angst voor erfelijkheid van de ziekte en op het feit dat sommige kinderen de oorzaak van de ziekte of verergering van de situatie bij zichzelf leggen. Ook wijzen zij erop dat een lichamelijke ziekte bij een ouder gepaard kan gaan met een psychische aandoening (m.n. de...
