The chert from the Castelltallat Formation (south-central Pyrenees): archaeometric characterisation and archaeological implications

Abstract: Chert from the limestones and marly limestones of Castelltallat Formation (Ebro Basin) was widely used throughout prehistoric times in north-eastern Iberia to produce stone tools due to its properties and accessibility.A rough estimate indicates that this rock -either as raw material or as lithic products-was distributed mainly to the north of the outcrops, over an area of 6000-8000km 2 . However, other rocks in the area have similar characteristics which can lead to confusion in the interpretation of its preh… Show more

“…This addition will contribute to the procedures used for identifying the chemical evolution of SRO similar to what some of us developed for the so-called Campanian Bergerac flint of Nouvelle Aquitaine and the Obourg flint from Hainault (Fernandes et al in press). This will also enable us to enhance the chemical aspect of the ID card for the various gitological types in the same way that Sanchez de la Torre (2015) and Ortega et al (2017) have done for SRO resources in Catalonia. Although the importance of geochemistry in the study of materials is widely proven it must take place following the precise determination of the naturalist characteristics (Sanchez de la Torre et al 2017a;2017b), since routine geochemical analysis is not suitable for SRO because of their open and metastable nature (Delvigne et al 2017;Fernandes 2012, Thiry et al 2014.…”
