The chemistry and efficacy benefits of polysaccharides from Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz

Abstract: Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (AM), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with many medicinal values, has a long usage history in China and other oriental countries. The phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of volatile oils, polysaccharides, lactones, flavonoids, and others. The polysaccharides from AM are important medicinal components, mainly composed of glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), rhamnose (Rha), arabinose (Ara), mannose (Man), galacturonic acid (GalA) and xylose (Xyl). It also showed valuab… Show more

“…Elsholtzia ciliate, Atractylodes macrocephala, Punica granatum pericarpium, and Cyperus rotundus are commonly used traditional Chinese herbs with various health benefits. Their safety has been recognized by numerous researchers and they are widely used in livestock and poultry breeding [7][8][9][10]. These herbs contain a variety of active ingredients, including organic acids, polyphenols, and polysaccharides, that have been reported to have positive effects on livestock production [8][9][10].…”

However, the effects of combinations of Chinese herbs on laying hens may vary depending on the specific combination used.…”

“…The differences between FTIR ranges, which can be used to differentiate obesity and non‐obesity people from salvia and blood, can be caused by another characteristic of these two biofluids. In salvia, high metabolism of polysaccharides was taken place; therefore, many signals from sugar functional groups were observed [36]. Other works also showed that the changes in the balance, measured by FTIR spectroscopy, between lipids and amides and polysaccharides were observed in obese people [37].…”

“…Additionally, polysaccharides primarily rich in Glc, Rha, Gal, Ara, etc. have been demonstrated to possess potent immunomodulatory activities ( 32 , 33 ). That is to say, PTFP could possess immunomodulatory potential.…”
