The Chemical Action of Gaseous Ions Produced by Alpha Particles Vii. Unsaturated Carbon Compounds

Abstract: A systematic study is herewith presented of the physical and chemical properties of selenium monochloride. Its properties in general are those of a typical acid chloride and a strong chlorinating agent.

“…A significant aspect of the chemistry of the above species is their tendency to polymerize, especially under the influence of ionizing radiation. For example, LlND, BARDWELL, and PERRY [18] investigated the radiation induced polymerization of both cyanogen and hydrogen cyanide and observed the formation of black or reddishbrown polymeric solids with empirical formulae (CN 0 95 )" and (H 0 97 CN 0 97 )", respectively. Unfortunately the structures of these materials were not determined.…”

“…Quantitative analysis of the energy deposition by the ionizing radiations is crucial for sustainability of lives and materials, however the dosimetry of cosmic rays with a variety of particles and a broad energy spectrum have been challenging to date. Ionizing radiation met polymeric materials in the beginning of 20th century [50,51] as a powerful tool of functionalization by chemical reactions induced via reactive intermediates such as ions, ion radicals, and neutral radials. The reactive intermediates, distributed homogeneously in the bulk polymeric materials, promote crosslinking, main chain scission, and subsequent graft polymerization reactions, which often dramatically improve the physical and mechanical properties of the polymeric materials [52].…”

“…Hydrocarbons irradiated with a particles are dehydrogenated, whereas in the presence of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water is produced, and the usual dehydrogenation is reduced or suppressed (Lind, Bardwell and Perry, 1926).
