The Charge-transfer Bands in the Crystal Spectra of Molecular Compounds of Tetramethylbenzidine and Those of Benzidine

Abstract: The polarized absorption spectra in the 280–1100 mμ region have been observed for the single crystals of eight molecular compounds which involve N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylbenzidine and benzidine as the electron donor and p-chloranil, TCNQ, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, and p-benzoquinone as the electron acceptor. The donor and acceptor molecules are not in the ionic states in the ground states of these molecular compounds, in spite of the low ionization potentials of tetramethylbenzidine and benzidine. The observed spectr… Show more

“…it has been found that the direction of the transition moment of the second charge-transfer band is nearly perpendicular to that of the first charge-transfer band (Amano, Kuroda & Akamatu, 1969). We have carried out a theoretical investigation on the electronic transitions expected for the molecular arrangement shown in Fig.…”

“…It was reported that the composition ratio of TCNQ:N-TMB in the CT complex is 1:1. 28 In the present case, the composition ratio of C 18 TCNQ:N-TMB may be determined by studying the relation between the intensity changes of the two CtN stretching bands (2222 and 2213 cm -1 ) and the molar ratio changes of C 18 TCNQ:N-TMB.…”

“…The type of CT complex of N-TMB‚C 18 TCNQ is similar to that of the CT complex of N-TMB‚TCNQ. 28 Band Assignments. In Figure 4, bands at 2922 and 2852 cm -1 are assigned to CH 2 antisymmetric and symmetric stretching modes of the alkyl chain of C 18 TCNQ, respectively.…”
