This study aims to find linguistic evidence that is able to act as legal evidence in determining the genuineness of a suicide note. The data sources were written and digital suicide notes from Indonesia. The data were collected from social media through documentation. The data collected were graphology and lingual units that indicate the linguistic features of a genuine suicide note. The units were seen from their structure, meaning, and context to determine the motivation. The data were analyzed through referential identity, orthography identity, and distributional methods from descriptive-qualitative and descriptive-quantitative approaches based on linguistic theories. The theories applied were intertextuality, meaning, linguistic features of suicide notes, the context of the situation, and generative transformation. The findings show that written and digital suicide notes, as well as posts on the victim’s social media, provide evidence that the note is genuine and written by the victim. The evidences are recursive graphology, interrelated propositions, and linguistic features of a genuine suicide note. The motivations for suicide are derived from the victim’s self-blaming, his acknowledgment of his inability to help himself from financial and mental issues, and a constant feeling of being a disappointment to people who had supported him.

Suicide notes are powerful pieces of evidence in suicide cases that left by individuals who commit suicide or who intend to commit suicide as massages, with the purpose is to voicing the victims’ feelings that remain unknown by people when they are alive. This study investigates the linguistic features contained in the suicide note written by UNNES student by using descriptive-qualitative as the research method and applying Prokofyeva's theory of suicide notes linguistic features. The suicide note is available and can be accessed online. This study aims to analyze the forensic stylistic approach towards suicide notes by showing the characteristics of linguistic features and interpreting the messages delivered by the victims on suicide notes. The researchers classified and described the data in five distinguished characteristics of linguistic features found in the suicide note; clear reasoning, expressing emotions, text structure, grammar, and punctuation. The findings revealed that all the features are present in the suicide note, yet the researchers found that there are different tenses used in the suicide note. The results found only ellipsis in the victim’s suicide note. The data findings in this research may assist future research regarding the study of forensic stylistics, specifically in investigating suicide notes.

This paper presents DIVIDED SELF metaphor analysis conducted drawing from the discourse of suicidal notes. The suicide notes represent a distinct genre because of its typical rhetorical structure and communicative purpose. In particular, the internal conflict experienced by the authors of suicidal notes makes this material suitable for an analysis of the metaphorical conceptualization of one’s own DIVIDED SELF. The research aims at modeling the conceptualization of one’s own conflicting SELF by the authors of the suicide notes and proposing approach to the metaphorical conceptualizations of the DIVIDED SELF as metaphtonymy, as well as describing their potential for representing the individual’s internal conflict. First, the cognitive framing of the inner SELF of the authors, divided into the instances of the Subject and the Self, was investigated. Second, in order to analyze metaphtonymic connections between the individual’s inner conceptualizations, the agentivity of the inner SELF conceptualizations was compared. Third, a metaphtonymic configuration of SELF conceptualizations was modeled and the potential of metaphorical framing of extreme psychological states through the metaphthonymic representation of the SELF described. The material of the study consisted of a corpus with a total size of 164,483 lexical units (the CEASE corpus combined with a self-assembled corpus of suicide notes). As demonstrated by the analysis, the aspect of the Self mainly acts as a fragmentation of the author in the DIVIDED SELF metaphor. That is, the study allowed to model metaphorical conceptualizations metaphtonymically and structure the stages of the formation of metaphtonymy through the visual illustrations.
