“…The high proportion of postsurgical CP (36%) in our study is due to the large number of cardiac surgeries performed at our institution (approximately 68,000 cardiac surgeries were performed between 1977 and 2000). Constrictive pericarditis as a complication of prior cardiac surgery occurred in 0.09% and is similar to prior estimates of 0.025% to 0.35% (5,27,29). In the postradiation subgroup, 11 patients (73%) received mediastinal radiation for lymphomas and 2 patients (13%) for breast cancer, which is similar to previous studies (3,5,6,8,10 -13).…”

“…In our series, 31% of patients had radiographically demonstrated CA. This is similar to 38% in seven previous studies (3,5,7,9,27,31,32) with a total of 640 patients. Pericardial calcification was more commonly associated with idiopathic CP.…”

“…The recent global trend in the etiology of CP is that the prevalence of Tbc is decreasing significantly, and clinical importance of cardiac surgery and mediastinal irradiation is increasing dramatically due to the increase of old population and high incidences of coronary artery disease, chronic renal disease, and thoracic tumor (9,10). In Korea, however, Tbc is still the most frequent identifiable etiology of CP.…”

“…Infectious diseases that contribute uncommon and rarer causes of constrictive pericarditis are Lassa fever. ?6 Legionella p n e~r n o n i a ,~~ meningococcaI,38 47 Nonpenetratir~g~~ or penetrating trauma49 to the pericardium, including penetration of pacing catheters into the pericardial sac, may lead to constrictive pericarditis. A peculiar instance of traumatic hemopericardium leading to constrictive pericarditis resulted from self-mutilation by sewing needles inserted through the chest wall.50…”
