The changes of densities and patterns of roads and rural buildings: a case study on Dongzhi Yuan of the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract: Roads and buildings are considered as primary causes of rural landscape changes. In this study, linear regression models were used to analyze the dynamic influences of environmental factors and variables on roads and rural buildings from 1979 to 2005 in Dongzhi Yuan (tableland) of the Loess Plateau, China. The relationship between roads and rural buildings and their effects on Dongzhi Yuan are discussed also. The results showed that three environmental factors (topography, land cover, and development level) ex… Show more

“…This is reflected in the degree of importance that the residents attach to different environmental factors. Commonly used impact factors include roads [52], water systems [53], vegetation [54][55][56], topography [57], climate [58], and the economy [59]. The economic factor is mostly used to study changes in the long-term development status of the target, which is not consistent with the transient behavior of site selection and was therefore excluded from the present study.…”

“…ELE was more important in the northwest region (EES and NE) than in the southeast (POR, TP, and PN). Housing security and transportation conditions are controlled by ELE (Bi et al, 2010). The economic production and life of the settlements in the northwest region are affected by poor rain-heat conditions and are sensitive to ELE values, while settlements in the southeast are not.…”

“…Factors such as the environmental amenities and the accessibility to infrastructure affect these individual choices (Gordon and Richardson, 1997;Turner, 2005). Especially, scenic natural resources attract development, residential land growth is more likely to occur in areas of particularly high ecological value (McGranahan, 1999), and may eventually cause environmental degradation (Hammer et al, 2004;Brueckner and Largey, 2008;Bi et al, 2010). Data on residential land development can thus be enormously used to understand the methods and the effects of urban landscape change and thereby influence the formulation of policies to guide future growth.…”
