The Challenges and Future Perspective of Woven Kenaf Reinforcement in Thermoset Polymer Composites in Malaysia: A Review

Abstract: In this review, the challenges faced by woven kenaf thermoset polymer composites in Malaysia were addressed with respect to three major aspects: woven kenaf reinforcement quality, Malaysian citizen awareness of woven kenaf thermoset composite products, and government supports. Kenaf plantations were introduced in Malaysia in the last two decades, but have generally not produced much kenaf composite product that has been widely accepted by the public. However, woven kenaf fiber enhances the thermoset composites… Show more

“…Several other advanced applications of CNTs-based composites have also been reported in the automotive, aerospace, marine and sporting goods industries. The potential of these materials to be applied in the aforementioned advanced applications can be improved by hybridising the CNTs with other materials, including natural fibres [ 45 , 110 , 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 ]. For example, CNT-polymer composites have been applied to the production of vehicles with the goal of reducing the weight of the body parts, which allows the vehicle to have lower fuel consumption and minimise global warming effects by reducing carbon dioxide emissions.…”

“…These demerits, including the poor interfacial bonding and exhibition of the hydrophilic property of natural fiber, can be avoided through various chemical treatments that alter the compatibility between the natural fiber with the polymer matrix. These chemical treatments form fully cured and cross-linked natural fibers that reinforced the polymeric matrix to attain improved mechanical strength and thermal stability [ 26 , 27 ]. A better compatibility between natural fiber and its polymer matrix may occur when the surface impurities and hydroxyl group components, such as pectin, lignin, and hemicellulose, are effectively washed from the fiber [ 28 ].…”

“…Li et al [ 48 ] studied cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) which have received significant attention due to their high Young’s modulus, high strength, biocompatibility, and renewability. These characteristics make them excellent for a polymer composite strengthening phase [ 49 , 50 ]. However, standard composite processing procedures have restrictions when composites with diverse forms are manufactured efficiently.…”
