Introduction: Writing a manuscript for publication is a challenge for those health practitioners whose primary role is to provide clinical services. The aim of this study was to increase the capacity of allied health practitioners who are employed in a clinical setting to submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.Methods: An action research study design was used to develop a “Writing for Publication” program for nine allied health practitioners who had not previously published a manuscript as lead author. Between May and November 2018, at a regional public hospital service, three 90-minute writing workshops were offered, which included manuscript plan and preparation guide, academic writing instruction, peer review and mentoring by experienced researchers. Data were collected using participant pre- and post-program surveys, post-workshop focus groups and facilitator reflections.Results: All participants reported that their writing skills had improved. Enablers to completing a manuscript for publication included structured preparation, mentoring, training in academic writing skills, protected writing time and external accountability. Challenges included not knowing where or how to start, competing priorities and distractions within and outside of work hours, inadequate academic writing skills and loss of momentum. Two participants submitted their manuscripts for publication by the end of the study and a further manuscript was submitted by the time of writing.Conclusions: Strategies to ensure publication of allied health practitioner research findings need to be integrated into project planning and monitoring processes embedded within a well-supported health service-wide research culture.

Objectives The purpose of our study was to determine the order in which science and health researchers read scientific papers, their reasons for doing so and the perceived difficulty and perceived importance of each section. Study design and setting An online survey open to science and health academics and researchers distributed via existing research networks, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. Results Almost 90% of respondents self-declared to be experienced in reading research papers. 98.6% of the sample read the abstract first because it provides an overview of the paper and facilitates a decision on continuing to read on or not. Seventy-five percent perceived it to be the easiest to read and 62.4% perceived it to be very important (highest rank on a 5-point Likert scale). The majority of respondents did not read a paper in the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results And Discussion) format. Perceived difficulty and perceived importance influenced reading order. Conclusion Science and health researchers do not typically read scientific and health research papers in IMRAD format. The more important a respondent perceives a section to be, the more likely they are to read it. The easier a section is perceived, the more likely it will be read. We present recommendations to those teaching the skill of writing scientific papers and reports.

Tropical diseases are associated with tropical regions, but global access travel, climate change, and environmental factors affecting disease vectors may spread to non-endemic countries. This review reinforces the view of nurses' roles and challenges to providing care for tropical diseases. This scoping review search included: SCOPUS, PubMed, EBSCO Medline, Science Direct, and citation search: Google Scholar. Studies included if the population was nurses or part of a multidisciplinary or provider intervention on tropical diseases and original English articles between 2011 and 2021 with various methods. From 773 studies identified, 23 met the inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged: 1) nurses role as health providers, educators, motivators, leaders, collaboration, and coordination; 2) providing safe working and job satisfaction; and 3) The role of organizations, health systems, and policymakers. There were also three challenges: 1) lack of skills, knowledge, and training for nurses, 2) the stigma of tropical diseases, 3) sociocultural approach. The role and practice of nursing in tropical diseases vary across healthcare settings, influenced by nurses' stigma, knowledge, training, job safety, and satisfaction. Nurse lack knowledge and training compared to other health workers. Potential to increase nurse participation with a sociocultural approach and involving nurse's leadership roles require further research
