“…Whatever the origin of air in the pipes, its presence creates unwanted problems in the majority of cases. One of the most important problems is overpressure generation (Martin 1976;Hamam and McCorquodale 1982;Fuertes 2001;Zhou et al 2002;Ramezani et al 2015). Other problems include section reduction inside the pipe, which may cause collapse; additional generation of head losses, which cause an increase in the electricity consumption; problems with noise and vibrations; interior corrosion due to the oxygen transported by the air; failures in the measurement instrumentation; etc.…”

“…Correctly designed and sized air valves release unwanted air out of the pipeline in a controlled and safe manner. Dynamic effects of poorly selected air valves may cause large pressure peaks (air valve slam) as found by Campbell [7] and recently reviewed by Ramezani et al [8].…”

“…The installation of air valves is an efficient protection against this undesirable phenomenon. These valves regulate the quantity of air in the pipeline so as to reduce or prevent potentially destructive consequences of the moving and entrapped air [7]. In the system under study, air valves are positioned along the route and their purpose is to deaerate the system during everyday operation, introduce the air in cases when the pressure in the pipeline is lower that the atmospheric pressure, and release the air from the pipeline when the system is refilled with water.…”
