Your story matters Paola Uccelli studies socio-cultural and individual differences in early language development and in academic literacy. With a background in linguistics, she explores how different language skills (at the lexical, grammatical, and discourse levels) interact with each other to either promote or hinder advances in language expression and comprehension. She is particularly interested in the challenges and possibilities faced by struggling students as they try to learn the academic discourse valued at school. Her current research addresses questions such as how struggling students expand their academic vocabulary and how they learn to use a variety of discourse structures flexibly and conventionally for diverse communicative purposes. LANGUAGE OF ACADEMIC WRITING 2 Abstract (144 words)Beyond mechanics and spelling conventions, academic writing requires progressive mastery of advanced language forms and functions. Pedagogically-useful tools to assess such language features in adolescents' writing, however, are not yet available. This study examines language predictors of writing quality in 51 persuasive essays produced by high school students attending a linguistically and ethnically diverse inner-city school in the Northeastern U.S. Essays were scored for writing quality by a group of teachers; transcribed and analyzed to generate automated lexical and grammatical measures; and coded for discourse-level elements by researchers who were blind to essays' writing quality scores. Regression analyses revealed that beyond the contribution of length and lexico-grammatical intricacy, the frequency of organizational markers and one particular type of epistemic stance marker, i.e., epistemic hedges, significantly predicted persuasive essays' writing quality. Findings shed light on discourse elements relevant for the design of pedagogically-informative assessment tools.

ResumenEl presente estudio se propone conocer el efecto del nivel escolar y el contexto social en la organización discursiva de dos géneros escritos. Se analizaron 240 historias personales y artículos explicativos escritos por 120 escolares de tres niveles de escolaridad: Séptimo Básico (12 años), Primero Medio (14 años) y Tercero Medio (16 años) y dos grupos sociales: Medio-Bajo (GSM) y Alto (GSA). Los textos fueron elicitados mediante un breve video sobre los usos de Internet y las redes sociales y luego etiquetados con CLAN. Para el análisis de datos se aplicaron Pruebas T y un diseño de ANOVA factorial mixto con dos factores intergrupales (nivel y grupo social). Los resultados muestran que en el GSM las historias se vuelven menos eventivas y más evaluativas con la edad, pero los artículos explicativos no modifican su organización discursiva. En el GSA hay evaluaciones en todas las edades, pero cambia el uso que se hace de las mismas en textos más extensos y complejos; los artículos explicativos cambian notablemente, tanto en extensión como en organización. Se concluye que la incorporación de nuevos recursos organizacionales y también el uso eficiente de tales recursos para elaborar la información en textos extensos, son características de la trayectoria hacia una producción discursiva competente.Palabras Clave: Desarrollo, organización discursiva, historia personal, artículo explicativo.

RESUMENEl desarrollo sintáctico tardío ha sido estudiado preferentemente desde una visión estructuralista del lenguaje, describiendo el surgimiento de distintos tipos de estructuras sintácticas a lo largo de la escolaridad. La escuela por su parte, dependiendo de las tradiciones instruccionales ha desplazado la enseñanza de una gramática explícita para dar paso a un enfoque comunicativo en el que el papel de esta aún no se logra afianzar. En este artículo se realiza una revisión crítica de los distintos supuestos sobre los que se fundamentan las investigaciones sobre desarrollo de la sintaxis para realizar una propuesta teórica de articulación entre discurso y sintaxis desde un enfoque socio-discursivo. Basándose en la visión de Bajtín (1982) del lenguaje como actividad social y su propuesta sobre géneros discursivos, se aborda la escuela como un marco de interacción con exigencias comunicativas y cognitivas propias. De esta manera, la escuela se caracteriza por exponer a los estudiantes a 'géneros discursivos secundarios' y a un nuevo tipo de conocimiento: 'los conceptos científicos'. Por tanto, el concebir el lenguaje como actividad social no implica solo poner en el centro de la reflexión la dimensión comunicativa del lenguaje sino también el vínculo con la actividad cognitiva.
