Detrital zircon provenance study of a metamorphosed sedimentary succession in the eastern part of the Kaoko Belt in Namibia has revealed two distinct sources for the Neoproterozoic sedimentation along the southwestern Congo Craton margin. The lower part of the succession shows detrital zircon ages consistent with erosion of Paleoproterozoic basement of the Congo Craton with an inferred Mesoproterozoic volcano-sedimentary cover. Within the middle part of the succession, which includes glaciogenic sediments correlated with the Sturtian (717-660 Ma) glaciation, the Mesoproterozoic zircon grains disappear and the signal is dominated by ages known from the Congo Craton basement. The sedimentation in these parts of the succession is interpreted as related to the early Neoproterozoic rifting. The sedimentary rocks in the top part of the profile contain only subordinate proportion of the Paleoproterozoic-Archaean zircon grains and the populations are dominated by three age groups of ca. 1.0-1.2 Ga, ca. 800-750 Ma and ca. 650 Ma, consistent with erosion of the Punta del Este-Coastal Terrane exposed in the centre of the Kaoko-Dom Feliciano-Gariep orogen. An associated glaciogenic horizon interpreted as reflecting the Marinoan (645-635 Ma) glaciation constrains the sedimentation in the upper part of the succession and suggests a short time span between the high-grade metamorphism/magmatism in the Punta del Este-Coastal Terrane and its exhumation. Sedimentary rocks with such detrital zircon pattern appear also in the Damara and Gariep belts. Their source in the western part of the Kaoko-Dom Feliciano-Gariep orogen suggests that they represent an early orogenic flysch that originated during early collision in the western part of the orogen. The short time span between the metamorphism/magmatism in the Punta del Este-Coastal Terrane and deposition of the early orogenic flysch derived from it suggests that the Coastal Terrane was never separated from the Congo Craton by an oceanic domain. The estimated time span between the end of lithospheric stretching and sedimentation of the early flysch suggests that the hypothetical Adamastor Ocean separating the western and eastern forelands of the Kaoko-Dom Feliciano-Gariep orogen must have been small.

This work is the result of a multiyear effort to use field geology to describe lithologies, to establish contact relationships and to create a sketch of the tectonic evolution of the Meso-to Neoproterozoic metasedimentary successions within the Schist Belt of the Dom Feliciano Belt. This low-grade metamorphic cover rests on the high-grade metamorphic basement of the La China and Las Tetas complexes. This basement is Archean-Paleoproterozoic in age. The Schist Belt is overlapped unconformably by the Barriga Negra formation. The Lavalleja complex and the Barriga Negra formation both deformed together during the D2 deformation event (~ 570 -540 Ma), but the Barriga Negra only partially recorded the D2 transpressive event, whereas the Lavalleja complex was affected by both the D1 tangential event and the D2 event. Event D1 would have developed a fold nappe with vergence to the south. This hypothesis is supported by different structures: (i) recumbent and upright folds oriented E-W, (ii) subhorizontal mylonitic foliation in marbles (calc-schists), (iii) stretching lineations plunging towards the SW in metaconglomerates of the Las Tetas Complex, and (iv) a reworking of the subhorizontal foliation parallel to the Sarandí del Yí strike-slip shear zone.KEYWORDS: Dom Feliciano Belt; Ediacaran; Deformation; Fold nappe; Tectonic evolution. Este trabalho descreve a primeira ocorrência de um granito peraluminoso na região de Porto Alegre, denominado Granito São Geraldo. Neste estudo foram realizadas análises petrográficas (microscopia óptica e eletrônica) e de química mineral (microssonda eletrônica) em lâminas delgadas oriundas de testemunhos de sondagem. O granito apresenta textura equigranular hipidiomórfica média e composição que varia de sieno a monzogranítica. Sua mineralogia é constituída por K-feldspato (37-48 %), quartzo (17-33 %), plagioclásio (23-28 %), muscovita + biotita (7-11 %) e, subordinadamente (< 1 %), granada, zircão, monazita, apatita, ilmenita e magnetita. A biotita, de origem primária, apresenta teores de elementos maiores (e.g. Al, Fe e Mg) compatível com as de granitos peraluminosos. A muscovita em geral é magmática, com composição similar a dos granitos fortemente peraluminosos (e.g. teores de Al, Fe, Mg e Ti). Os teores de Or do K-feldspato (ortoclásio) variam entre 86-97 %. O plagioclásio é predominantemente oligoclásico, subordinadamente apresentando composição albítica. Teores elevados de espessartina da granada (26-32 %) sugerem uma origem magmática. A apatita (fluorapatita) apresenta teores de F entre 3,0-4,5 %. O caráter peraluminoso deste granito o difere de todos os granitos descritos na região de Porto Alegre. Sua composição é similar a dos granitos com duas micas que compõem a Suíte Cordilheira (Batólito Pelotas), a qual engloba a maioria dos granitos peraluminosos tipo-S, sintranscorrentes a zonas de cisalhamento transcorrentes dúcteis encontradas no domínio oriental do Cinturão Dom Feliciano.
