Wooden material has been used for shipbuilding and structural purposes in the marine environment since ancient times. Wood being used in the sea water can be damaged by marine wood boring organisms, which can turn marine wooden structures unserviceable with great economic cost. Using naturally durable species and preservative treated wood can increase the service life of wooden maritime structures and avoid or minimise the damages caused by marine borers. In this study, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Black pine (Pinus nigra) and Turkish fir (Abies bornmülleriana) naturally grown and economically important wood species in Turkey were treated with copper-azole and evaluated in marine trials for 7 and 14 months in the Western Black Sea region. In this experiment, Teredo navalis was the only teredinid species identified. Copper-azole treated fir and Scots pine specimens suffered no attack, after 7 and 14 months exposure, except four panels which suffered minor damage. However, copper-azole treated Black pine panels were moderately damaged, and all of the control panels of the softwoods were strongly attacked. The average largest shell diameter was found to be 4,79 mm in Scots pine, while the longest pallets (4,71 mm) was found in Black pine.All untreated test panels scored an average of 4 (heavily attacked) after a 14 month period. The cellulose ratio of Black pine decreased from 56 % to 50 %, and the holo-cellulose ratio from 76 % to 71 %. The treated samples showed resistance against marine borers although the copper (cu) leaching was high during the 14 months exposure underwater.

Recently, timber estate or plantation forest plays an important role on wooden based industries. However, the plantation timber quality is relatively low. Some treatments have been developed to improve its low quality, such as preservation with CCB (Chromate Copper Boron) and impregnation with plastic compounds. This study is to compare the durability of timber treated with plastic and CCB, non-treated from plantation forest timber as well as from natural forest. The plantation timber studied were jeungjing (Paraserianthes falcataria), damar (Agathis sp.), pinus (Pinus merkusii), and rubberwood (Hevea brasilliensis). Non-treated timbers that usually used for marine construction were ulin (Eusideroxylon zwageri), jati/teak (Tectona grandis), laban (Vitex pubescens) and merbau (Instia bijuga). After 6 and 12 months, the results showed that CCB preserved timber were more durable than plastic impregnated timber and nontreated timber. Wood samples were mostly attacked by marine borer organisms from the family of Pholadidae and Teredinidae. The experiment results revealed the possibility of using those plantation forest timber species for marine construction purposes.

Shorea platyclados, known to the public as Meranti Bukit, is one of the species whose existence is difficult to find, so efforts are needed for its preservation, namely by propagation techniques with natural saplings that are expected to produce optimal growth.S. platyclados, including types that can grow with a light intensity of 30–50% and therefore require shade for early growth, needs NPK fertilizer to get optimal growth. This study aims to obtain the appropriate dose of NPK fertilizer and optimum light requirements for the growth of natural saplings by measuring the percent of life, height, diameter, and number of leaves. The design used is a random group design (rack) with 5 additional treatments of NPK fertilizer doses, namely control (0 gr), 0.25 gr, 0.50 gr, 0.75 gr, and 1 gr, and 4 shade blocks, namely without shade (0%), shade 50%, shade 60%, and shade 70%. The results showed that the application of NPK fertilizer significantly affected the number of leaves. The result is an increase in the number of leaves at a dose of 1 g with a value of 17 (strands) and 0.75 g with a value of 15 (strands). The provision of shade blocks has a significant effect on the diameter parameters. The best result is an increase in diameter at 70% shade, with an average diameter of 1,984 mm. NPK fertilizer application shows a 100% life percentage, and shade application shows a 100% life percentage.
