The CC genotype in HTR2A T102C polymorphism is associated with behavioral impulsivity in alcohol-dependent patients

Abstract: High levels of impulsivity can increase the vulnerability for development of alcohol dependence. Moreover, impulsivity is considered to be a predictor of poor treatment outcomes. Few studies, however, have directly examined the genetics of impulsivity in alcohol-dependent patients. We analyzed the relationships between a well-recognized genetic marker of serotonin activity and levels of impulsivity as measured by both the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and the stop-signal task among 304 alcohol-dependent… Show more

“…After discarding the references that clearly did not meet the criteria, the studies were then filtered to ensure conformity with our inclusion criteria. Two studies (Jakubczyk et al 2011; Wrzosek et al 2011) were excluded because no data of matched normal controls were described, and one study (Yang et al 2012) was excluded because the genotype data was same as that described in another study (Yang et al 2010). Finally, 21 studies, composed of 20 case-control studies and one HRR study (Hill et al 2002), met our criteria for inclusion.…”

“…54 It is also a significant predictor of cocaine, 55 opioid, 56 and alcohol abuse or dependence. 57 Finally, note that no psychiatric diagnosis measured in our study was a predictor of substance dependence according to the multiple logistic regression model. An explanation could be that substance dependence precedes the appearance of a possible mental disorder-but other longitudinal studies are needed to validate this hypothesis.…”

“…Specifically, Jakubczyk et al (2012) found that the minor allele of rs6313 was associated with better response inhibition on the stop signal task in a sample of alcohol-dependent individuals. Similarly, Bjork et al (2002) found that the minor allele was associated with better response inhibition on a continuous performance task in a sample of adults with histories of depression or substance abuse.…”
