The “Cavitary” Type of Angiogenesis by Gastric Cancer. Morphological Characteristics and Prognostic Value

Abstract: The “cavitary” type of angiogenesis in patients with gastric cancer (GC) is described for the first time. Material and methods: The samples of tumour and adjacent gastric mucosa (GM) in 73 patients with GC who had undergone radical surgery were being studied. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemically (IGH) using antibodies to CD34. Results: А new type of vessel formation consists of the appearance of cavitary structures (CS) in tumours and the adjacent GM, which are t… Show more

“…In this study we decided to investigate the morphological features of tumor vessels in BC. The obtained data allowed us to identify the several types of tumor vessels differing both in morphology and clinical relevance: the normal MVs, DCs of peritumoral stroma, ADCs and the CS type-1 and type-2 relating to “cavitary” type of angiogenesis (Senchukova and Kiselevsky 2014 ).…”

“…We have previously described a new way of angiogenesis, named by us the “cavitary” type of angiogenesis, and have showed its clinical significance on the example of gastric cancer (GC). This type of angiogenesis consists in the formation of “cavitary” structures (CS) in the tumor stroma and adjacent gastric mucosa, being then lined by the endothelium and merged into the blood vessels of the organ (Senchukova and Kiselevsky 2014 ). The obtained data have allowed us to propose the existence of two main mechanisms of CS formation.…”

“…A new form of neoangiogenesis in gastric cancer called the "cavity type" has been recently described, but its clinical relevance is unclear [33]. While the clinical efficacy of antiangiogenic therapy has been clearly shown in some type of solid tumors, it is still unknown whether this benefits maintained over the time.…”

“…Полости в свою очередь могут возникают тремя способами: 1) отслойка эпителия (как нормального, так и опухолевого) от базальной мембраны и их десквамация в просвет облитерированных желез желудка; 2) дилатация желез желудка и истончение их стенок; 3) формирование полости непосредственно из собственной пластинки или опухолевой стромы. Также было отмечено снижение 3-летней выживае-мости и положительное воздействие антибактериальных препаратов на прогноз у пациентов с 1-м типом образования полостей [46].…”
