The Case of the Purple Urinary Collection Bag

Abstract: An 80-year-old man with bladder cancer presented to the emergency room confused and unable to stand. A clean-catch midstream urine revealed dark yellow urine (Fig. 1, inset) with pH 7.6, protein 3ϩ, and numerous red and white blood cells and bacteria. He was admitted for urosepsis. Two to 3 days after Foley catheterization, purple-colored urine was noted (Fig. 1).
