The Carboniferous Goniatites of the North of England and Their Zones

Abstract: The Carboniferous strata consist, except near the shore lines of that age, of two clearly marked divisions : a lower division, consisting-mainly of clear water deposits (Mountain Limestone) and an upper division (Millstone Grit and Coal Measures), almost entirely composed of beds of detrital origin. When, however, the sequence is examined more closely it is seen that the details of the lithological succession vary greatly in different areas, and hence arises doubt and hesitation in correlating widely separated… Show more

“…The genus ranges through a large part of the late Viséan (Asbian and early Brigantian equivalent) and has been reported from the European North Variscan basins such as the British Isles (e.g. Bisat 1924Bisat , 1934Bisat , 1952Moore 1936Moore , 1946Moore , 1952Moore , 1958Hodson & Moore 1959), the Rhenish Mountains (e.g. Brüning 1923;Schmidt 1925;Nicolaus 1963;Korn 1988Korn , 1990Korn , 1997a, the Ardennes (e.g.…”

“…Goniatites crenistria is a very common species at many places in central Europe, being the most celebrated index fossil because of its mass occurrence in the Crenistria Limestone of the Rhenish Mountains and Harz (Nicolaus 1963;Korn 1988;Mestermann 1998). It is also abundant at places in North England (Bisat 1924;Moore 1936), but has not been discovered in the fossiliferous sections of Ireland (Brandon & Hodson 1985). Occurrences in the South Portuguese Zone are quite rare (Korn 1997).…”
