The carbon balance of Africa: synthesis of recent research studies

Abstract: The African continent contributes one of the largest uncertainties to the global CO 2 budget, because very few long-term measurements are carried out in this region. The contribution of Africa to the global carbon cycle is characterized by its low fossil fuel emissions, a rapidly increasing population causing cropland expansion, and degradation and deforestation risk to extensive dryland and savannah ecosystems and to tropical forests in Central Africa. A synthesis of the carbon balance of African ecosystems i… Show more

“…Andreae, 1991;Laporte et al 2007). As a result, Africa is considered a major source of inter-annual variability in global atmospheric CO 2 (Ciais et al, 2011 Figure A1 in the appendix presents the frequency distribution of the marks/scores obtained during the experiment. The minimum mean score was 56.7, with a standard deviation of 9.48.…”

“…The secondary or underlying drivers of deforestation include population increases and shifting urban/rural populations associated with economic migration (Ciais, Bombelli et al 2011, Ham andChirwa 2012). Mitigation therefore requires a focus on projects that intensify agricultural production or diversify livelihood away from agriculture, and provide alternative fuel sources, including agroforestry and conservation agriculture projects (Ciais, Bombelli et al 2011). Through improved soil management practices and increased forest cover, these activities can further mitigate climate change in the form of increased carbon sequestration (Vågen, Lal et al 2005).…”

“…The uncertainties associated with the current knowledge of the SSA ecosystems carbon balance are rather high as shown by the different estimates (section 3.1). Ciais et al (2011) showed that the uncertainties are particularly high for ecosystems such as savannas and Environment and Development Economics 397 The implementation of actions to reduce GHG emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in the framework of the REDD+ mechanism requires the quantification of emission reductions and removals. This in turn raises the crucial issue of available methods to estimate C stocks and stock changes, and their adaptation to the SSA context.…”
