A B S T R A C TThe mangrove forest of the estuarine system of Santos, Brazil, occupies 71 km 2 -an area consisting of a complex system of canals and rivers forming a predominantly depositional environment. The climate provides high rainfall, with no water deficit and minimum temperatures above 18 o C. In this environment, 3,870 mangrove trees, distributed on 20 random transects, were identified, counted and measured and the litterfall measured. The phytosociological data (density, height and basal area) were measured in parcels at different distances from the waterline. Three species of trees were identified: Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia schaueriana and Laguncularia racemosa. The data showed large variability between stands but with no zonation perpendicular to the fringe in relation to phytosociological descriptors, the distribution of the tree species and litterfall production. This phenomenon is attributed to the low energy subsidy occurring as a function of the microtidal regime, the reduced velocity of the water in the innermost regions of the estuarine system, the homogeneous sediment (silt) and mostly the absence of any water deficit in the region. All these factors reduce the environmental gradient from the fringe to the interior of the basin. Some stands also showed immature features which were attributed to the anthropogenic impacts of many kinds, mainly over the last 60 years, that have been preventing the mangroves from attaining their full development. R E S U M OO manguezal do sistema estuarino de Santos, Brasil, ocupa uma área de 71 km 2 , consistindo de um complexo sistema de canais e rios, em ambiente predominantemente deposicional. O clima apresenta alta pluviosidade, sem déficit hídrico e com temperatura mínima de 18ºC. Foram mensuradas, contadas e identificadas 3.870 árvores de mangue em 20 seções aleatórias e medida a produção mensal de serapilheira. Os dados fitossociológicos (densidade, altura e área basal) foram medidos em parcelas a diferentes distâncias da linha da água. Três espécies de árvores foram identificadas: Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia schaueriana e Laguncularia racemosa. Os dados mostraram grande variabilidade entre bosques, mas sem zonação perpendicular à franja, em relação a todas as variáveis fitossociológicas, à distribuição das espécies arbóreas e à produção de serapilheira. Atribuiu-se este fenômeno ao baixo subsídio de energia devido ao regime de micromarés, à reduzida velocidade da água nas regiões internas do sistema estuarino, à homogeneidade do sedimento (silte), e, principalmente, à ausência de déficit hídrico na região. Todos estes fatores reduzem o gradiente ambiental da franja para a bacia. Alguns bosques apresentaram feições de imaturidade o que foi atribuído aos impactos antropogênicos de diversas naturezas, principalmente nos últimos 60 anos, que estariam obstando o pleno desenvolvimento do manguezal.

Habitat use by the Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) and discovery of feeding territoriality are discussed here. The results showed the existence of a territorial individual defending an area (2,564.46 ± 943.56 m 2 ) close to the mangrove, and non-territorial individuals (9.17 ± 2.54) in the rest of a demarcated area (mean area for the non-territorial: 893.25 ± 676.72). A weak positive correlation (r = 0.47, df = 46, p < 0.05) was found between the overlapping of territorial and non-territorial individuals (2.85 ± 3.07 m 2 ) and the mean overlapped area for territorial individuals (171.41 ± 131.40 m 2 ). Higher capture (1.52 ± 1.14 × 1.00 ± 1.37 catches/minutes) and success rates (0.45 ± 0.31 × 0.21 ± 0.27) and lower energy expenditure rates (45.21 ± 14.96 × 51.22 ± 14.37 steps/minutes; and 3.65 ± 2.55 × 4.94 ± 3.28 stabs/minutes) were observed for individuals foraging in areas close to the mangrove. The results suggest that the observed territorial behaviour is more related to a number of food parameters than to intruder pressure, and also that the observed territoriality might be related to defense of areas with higher prey availability.Keywords: used area, estuary, defense, foraging behaviour, territory.Desvendando territorialidade alimentar na Garça-Azul, Egretta caerulea, em Cananéia, Brasil ResumoUso do habitat pela garça-azul (Egretta caerulea) e a descoberta da territorialidae alimentar são discutidos aqui. Maiores taxas de captura (1,52 ± 1,14 × 1,00 ± 1,37 capturas /minutos) e sucesso (0,45 ± 0,31 × 0,21 ± 0,27 capturas/tentativas de captura) e menores taxas de gasto energético (45,21 ± 14,96 × 51,22 ± 14,37 passos/min; e 3,65 ± 2,55 × 4,94 ± 3,28 tentativas de captura/min) foram registradas para indivíduos forrageando em áreas mais próximas do manguezal. Os resultados sugerem que o comportamento territorial observado tem mais relação com alguns parâmetros alimentares do que com a pressão de intrusos. The aim of the present study was to describe the characteristics of Guiana dolphins (S. guianensis) group size and composition in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (25° 15' -25° 36' S and 48° 02'-48° 45' W), Paraná State, as well as to verify the existence of relationships between a given environmental variable (water depth, salinity, transparency and temperature) and group size. An area of around 124 km 2 was surveyed by boat from April 2006 to February 2008 in the following subsets of the estuary: Canal do Superagui (~28 km 2 ), Pinheiros bay (~34 km 2 ), part of Laranjeiras bay, which included the Guaraqueçaba sub-estuary (~38 km 2 ), and part of the Mixture Section of the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (~24 km 2 ). In 45 survey days, a total of 147 hours were spent observing 286 groups of S. guianensis. Groups varied from two individuals to aggregations of up to 90 individuals (mean ± SD: 11.5 ± 14.4 individuals). Solitary individuals were seen only on five occasions (1.7% of all observations). Groups with calves (n = 247) represented 86.4% overall and were more common in all sub-areas when compared to groups without calves. Groups without calves were found in all sub-areas and were usually smaller and composed of up to 12 individuals. A usual group composition of 70% of adults and 30% of calves was observed considering all sub-areas and seasons. No correlations were found between group size and water temperature (Spearman's rank test, r = 0.0059, p = 0.9338), transparency (Spearman's rank test, r = 0.0597, p = 0.9333), depth (Spearman's rank test, r = 0.1421, p = 0.4698), and salinity (Spearman's rank test, r = -0.1938, p = 0.0665). While Guiana dolphin groups were seen in the entire surveyed area, group size varied significantly among the three main surveyed sub-areas (Kruskal Wallis, H 2,196 = 29.85, p = 0.0000). Groups were larger in Laranjeiras bay and smaller in Canal do Superagui. The physical environment, risk of predation, seasonal distribution and abundance of prey are the main possible factors driving larger groups in inner and protected waters.
