Parasitoid wasps are a potent biological control agent in the field. The successful of parasitism are determined by several factors, among them by the presence of polydnavirus (PDV) symbiont that could break down the immunity mechanism of its host. We explored the existence of PDV on wasps , sp., and , a group of parasitoid on cabbage pests in Indonesia. Morphological study of PDV was done by preparing ultrasectioned calyx tissues and negative stained of extracted calyx fluid of adult parasitoids. Virogenic stroma resulted from differentiated calyx epithelial cells appeared on all three wasps. Bracovirus and ichnovirus were detected from the calyx tissues of and . The electron dense materials of PDV were distributed within nucleus and vacuolated cytoplasm of calyx cells, calyx lumen and on the surface of eggs wasps. PDVs particles were also shown in the extracted calyx fluid of sp.Key words: calyx tissues, parasitoids, polydnavirus, ultrastructureParasitoid merupakan salah satu musuh alami penting di lapang. Kesuksesan parasitisme ditentukan oleh beberapa faktor, antara lain polidnavirus (PDV), yaitu simbion yang dapat mematahkan sistem pertahanan inang, sehingga parasitoid dapat berkembang biak dengan sukses pada inangnya. Dalam penelitian ini, telah dieksplorasi keberadaan PDV pada tiga jenis parasitoid, , sp., dan , yang merupakan musuh alami hama penting pada kubis. Studi morfologi PDV dilakukan dengan membuat irisan ultra preparat dari jaringan kaliks dan melakukan pewarnaan negatif pada ekstrak cairan kaliks dari parasitoid dewasa. Stroma virogen dari sel epitel yang telah terdiferensiasi tampak dari ketiga parasitoid yang diuji. Bracovirus dan ichnovirus juga terdeteksi dalam jaringan kaliks dari dan . Materi padat elektron dari PDV tampak terdistribusi dalam inti dan sitoplasma jaringan kaliks, rongga kaliks, dan permukaan telur parasitoid. RESUMOConduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de quantificar taninos condensados presentes nas cascas do caule de Ochroma pyramidalis (Bombacaceae), Schinus terebinthifolius (Anacardiaceae), Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Fabaceae) e Peltophorum dubium (Fabaceae) e verificar o efeito de frações tânicas dessas espécies sobre parâmetros biológicos e nutricionais de S. frugiperda. A partir das cascas das espécies vegetais se prepararam extratos, dos quais alíquotas foram tomadas para a quantificação dos taninos. Em seguida, os extratos foram submetidos a fracionamento para a obtenção das frações tânicas, que foram incorporadas à dieta artificial e oferecidas para lagartas de S. frugiperda. Todas as espécies vegetais estudadas apresentaram taninos condensados, sendo que S. terebinthifolius apresentou menor quantidade desses compostos. A fração tânica de P. dubium causou redução no peso das lagartas e pupas, diminuição na sobrevivência de S. frugiperda durante as fases larval e pupal, e acarretou menor consumo alimentar, além de prolongar a duração das fases imaturas desse inseto. O tratamento com S. terebinthifolius causou redução na percentagem de sobrevivência, durante a fase de pupa. Pupas provenientes de lagartas que receberam tratamento com a fração de E. contortisiliquum tiveram aumento no seu período de desenvolvimento. Lagartas alimentadas com a fração proveniente de P. dubium apresentaram a menor taxa de crescimento relativo (RGR), menor eficiência de conversão do alimento digerido (ECD) e maior custo metabólico (CM). A digestibilidade aproximada (AD) foi maior para os tratamentos com as frações tânicas de P. dubium e S. terebinthifolius. Extracts were prepared from the barks of the plant species and aliquots were taken from them to quantify the tannins. The extracts were then submitted to fractionation to obtain the tannic fractions, which ones were incorporated into an artificial diet and offered to the larvae of S. frugiperda. All the studied species showed condensed tannins, and S. terebinthifolius showed the lowest amount of these compounds. The tannin fraction of P. dubium caused a reduction in the weight of larvae and pupae, decreased the survival of S. frugiperda during the larval and pupal stages and led to a reduction of intake, beyond to extend the duration of immature stages of this insect. Superparasitism refers to the oviposition behavior of parasitoid females who lay their eggs in an already parasitized host. Recent studies have shown that allocation of additional eggs to an already parasitized host may be beneficial under certain conditions. In the present work, mortality of Microplitis rufiventris wasps was significantly influenced by both host instar of Spodoptera littoralis larvae at parasitism and level of parasitism. In single parasitization, all host instars (first through sixth) were not equally suitable. Percentage of emergence success of wasp larvae was very high in parasitized first through third (highly suitable hosts), fell to 60% in the fourth instar (moderate suitable) and sharply decreased in the penultimate (5th) instars (marginally suitable). Singly parasitized sixth (last) instar hosts produced no wasp larvae (entirely unsuitable), pupated and eclosed to apparently normal adult moths. The scenario was different under superparasitism, whereas supernumerary individuals in the highly suitable hosts were almost always killed as first instars, superparasitization in unsuitable hosts (4th through 6th) had significant increase in number of emergence success of wasp larvae. Also, significantly greater number of parasitoid larvae successfully developed in unsuitable hosts containing three wasp eggs than counterparts containing two wasp eggs. Moreover, the development of surplus wasp larvae was siblicidal in earlier instars and nonsiblicidal gregarious one in the penultimate and last ''sixth'' instars. It is suggested that the optimal way for M. rufiventris to deal with high quality hosts (early instars) is to lay a single egg, while the optimal way to deal with low quality hosts (late instars) might be to superparasitize these hosts.
