The calibration of a Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometer for energy and relative intensity measurements

Abstract: Two aspects of Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometry are discussed. The non-linearity of an amplifier-analyzer system was measured using a precision pulser and was checked with gamma-ray standards. The overall accuracy was 2 parts in 104. The relative detection efficiency of gamma-ray full-energy peaks was determined using sources with well measured relative gamma-ray emission rates. Two Ge(Li) detectors with active volumes of 3 cm 2 × 0.5 cm and 4 cm 2 × 0.5 cm were calibrated in the energy range 80-3200 keV. An over… Show more

“…The resolution of the system was 3.5 keV at 733 keV for the coaxial detector and 3.0 keV at 733 keV for the trapezoidal detector. The non-linearities in the system were accounted for using the method of Donnelly et al 19). This method gives a measure of the non-linearity associated with the entire electronic system.…”

“…For the purpose of energy determinations, the centroid of the peak area was taken as the definition of the peak position [discussed in ref. 22)]. Gamma-ray energies between 919.5 and 2548.6 keV were determined using the 487.03 and 815.80 keV ?-ray lines in the spectrum for the calibration.…”
