The Cadenza as Parenthesis

Abstract: Conventional wisdom holds that the cadenza is a musical parenthesis. Like linguistic parenthetical remarks, cadenzas may be engaging, illuminating, and insightful, but they are not regarded as intrinsic to structural coherence.
