The Ca II infrared triplet as indicator of anomalous Ca isotopic mixture in HgMn stars

Abstract: Abstract. For the first time we present observational evidence for an anomalous isotopic structure of Ca  in mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars. The centroid wavelengths of Ca  infrared triplet lines in a number of stars have been found redshifted with respect to the centroids of the terrestrial Ca  lines. The record holder is the star HD 175640 for which the measured wavelength is consistent with Ca  being present in the atmosphere entirely in form of the heaviest stable isotope 48 Ca. This is a very stri… Show more

“…Given T (τ), the depth integrations from log(τ 5000 ) of −5.4 to +1.4 were carried out with software and opacity routines written and used at Michigan for several decades. Agreement with ATLAS9 Models posted on Castelli's (2010) site are excellent (see Castelli & Kurucz 2003 The spectral type of HD 101412 is given variously as B9-A0 V-III (e.g. B9/A0 V, Houk & Cowley 1975).…”

“…The Ca ii infrared triplet was examined for possible isotopic shifts discovered by Castelli & Hubrig (2004). The lines were shifted by 0.02 to 0.03 Å with respect to the solar wavelengths of these lines, a rather small shift that could be entirely due to measurement error.…”

“…The wavelength red-shift of the infrared triplet observed in several CP stars (Cowley et al 2007) was interpreted by Castelli & Hubrig (2004a) as due to a Ca isotopic composition different from the terrestrial one.…”

“…Such a shift, observed in numerous HgMn stars and Ap stars (Cowley et al 2007) was discovered by Castelli & Hubrig (2004b), who interpret it as due to an anomalous calcium isotopic composition. To compute the Xe ii line spectrum we derived the xenon abundance in each star from the equivalent widths of a set of unblended Xe ii lines.…”
