The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS): design and capabilities

Abstract: The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) is an all-sky full-polarization survey at a frequency of 5 GHz, designed to provide complementary data to the all-sky surveys of WMAP and Planck, and future CMB B-mode polarization imaging surveys. The observing frequency has been chosen to provide a signal that is dominated by Galactic synchrotron emission, but suffers little from Faraday rotation, so that the measured polarization directions provide a good template for higher frequency observations, and carry direct informa… Show more

“…The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) is a project to produce a high sensitivity all-sky map at 5 GHz in total intensity and polarization with a resolution of just under 1 • (Jones et al 2018). The primary science goal of C-BASS is to be E-mail: luke.jew@physics.ox.ac.uk used in combination with other data sets to produce maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) that are free from contaminating foreground Galactic emission in both total intensity and polarization.…”

“…The C-BASS project is surveying the entire sky, in intensity and polarization, at a nominal frequency of 5 GHz and an angular resolution of ≈ 45 arcmin (Jones et al 2018). It uses two telescopes to obtain full-sky coverage; the northern telescope is a 6.1 m Gregorian antenna situated at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, California, and the southern telescope is a 7.6 m Cassegrain antenna situated at Klerefontein, the MeerKAT/SKA South Africa support base.…”

“…The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) is a survey of the entire sky at 5 GHz, in intensity and polarization, at a resolution of 45 arcmin (King et al 2010;Jones et al 2018). The frequency chosen is ideal for CMB component separation studies, being much closer to observing frequencies used by CMB experiments, typically at 30 GHz and higher.…”

“…The C-Band All Sky Survey (C-BASS) is a survey aimed at mapping the entire sky, both in total and polarized intensities, at 5 GHz (C-Band) with 45 arcmin angular resolution (Jones et al 2018). To cover the entire sky, C-BASS is being performed with two telescopes located in North and South hemispheres.…”
