The Business of Anti-Aging Science

Abstract: Age-related conditions are the leading causes of death and health-care costs. Reducing the rate of aging would have enormous medical and financial benefits. Myriad genes and pathways are known to regulate aging in model organisms, fostering a new crop of anti-aging companies. Approaches range from drug discovery efforts to big-data methods and direct-to-consumer (DTC) strategies. Challenges and pitfalls of commercialization include reliance on findings from short-lived model organisms, poor biological understa… Show more

“…Aging cells accumulate DNA damage, where the cell cycle checkpoints plan for an irreversible growth arrest. 68 Along with this, advances in metagenomics have shown that the majority of Earthʼs biodiversity has not been explored for natural products discovery yet. The extract of S. flavida prompted a reduction in the proportion of the cells in the G0/G1 phase and increased the number of G2/M cells, which clearly showed that the rate of cell division was accelerated.…”

“…Identifying rejuvenating factors in human blood has resulted in significant optimism for finding simple and affordable treatments for age-related diseases [21]. However, so far, no convincing results have been presented, and no consensus on mechanisms or implications exists [10,14,20,22].…”

“…The pharmaceutical industry used to apply methods developed for single, acute diseases to multiple, chronic diseases (see Thiem et al 2011;Roman and Ruiz-Cantero 2017) instead of targeting the underlying aging and regenerative processes as described above. Since about 2015, various biotech companies have raised funds to bring biology of aging results to the clinics (see De Magalhães et al 2017;. Various investor reports, books, and conferences consider that current retired persons may be the first populations to benefit from such advances (see Mellon and Chalabi 2017;Pratt 2016;and Casquillas 2016).…”
