The burden of hepatitis C virus in the world, China, India, and the United States from 1990 to 2019

Abstract: Background and aimHepatitis C virus infection can lead to an enormous health burden worldwide. Investigating the changes in HCV-related burden between different countries could provide inferences for disease management. Hence, we aim to explore the temporal tendency of the disease burden associated with HCV infection in China, India, the United States, and the world.MethodsDetailed data on the total burden of disease related to HCV infection were collected from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database.… Show more

“…In general, oncogenic viruses do not necessarily lead to the development of cancer; instead it is their interactions with host factors that leads to preneoplastic conditions and subsequently cancer through various mechanisms, such as dysregulation of the immune system ( 16 ). Another common point between the present study and the aforementioned study ( 10 ) is that both patients were from China, which has a high incidence of hepatitis B and C infections compared with other countries ( 17 , 18 ). Furthermore, neither patient had a record of clinical symptoms associated with the tumor, and both collision tumors were discovered incidentally during health examinations.…”

“…Today, against HIV alone there are ten FDA-approved protease inhibitors, while other diseases, such as hypertension, AIDS and cancer, have also benefited by the discovery of inhibitors [ 20 ]. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is another major infection with an enormous global health burden with no available vaccine, affecting 58 million people worldwide and causing 290,000 deaths annually [ 30 ]. The most notorious HCV drugs, boceprevir 9 and telaprevir 8 , are also peptidomimetic molecules, with the most recent drugs following the same trend [ 31 ] ( Table 1 ).…”

“…In the late 20 th century, there was a significant shift in the etiology of chronic liver disease due to the advent of Hepatitis C infection, which also contributed to a rising trend in the incidence of liver-related malignancies[ 1 ]. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that globally, around 58 million individuals are infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV).…”
