The identification of nearly 3,500 cases of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection in U.S. residents returning in 2014 and 2015 from areas in which it is endemic has raised concerns within the transplant community that, should recently infected individuals become organ and/or tissue donors, CHIKV would be transmitted to transplant recipients. Thus, tests designed to detect recent CHIKV infection among U.S. organ and tissue donors may become necessary in the future. Accordingly, we evaluated 2 enzymelinked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for CHIKV IgM readily available in the United States using 1,000 deidentified serum or plasma specimens collected from donors between November 2014 and March 2015. The Euroimmun indirect ELISA identified 38 reactive specimens; however, all 38 were negative for CHIKV IgG and IgM in immunofluorescence assays (IFAs) conducted at a reference laboratory and, thus, were falsely reactive in the Euroimmun CHIKV IgM assay. The InBios IgM-capture ELISA identified 26 reactive samples, and one was still reactive (index > 1.00) when retested using the InBios kit with a background subtraction modification to identify false reactivity. This reactive specimen was CHIKV IgM negative but IgG positive by IFAs at two reference laboratories; plaque reduction neutralization testing (PRNT) demonstrated CHIKV-specific reactivity. The IgG and PRNT findings strongly suggest that the InBios CHIKV IgM-reactive result represents true reactivity, even though the IgM IFA result was negative. If testing organ/tissue donors for CHIKV IgM becomes necessary, the limitations of the currently available CHIKV IgM ELISAs and options for their optimization must be understood to avoid organ/tissue wastage due to falsely reactive results. C hikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an alphavirus transmitted from person to person via mosquito bites (1). Symptoms include fever, rash, and debilitating arthralgia; 15% to 60% of patients develop chronic arthralgia leading to arthritic joint damage (2). After a large CHIKV outbreak in India and southeast Asia in 2004 through 2006, in which nearly 2 million people became infected (3, 4), epidemiologists predicted that CHIKV might move to other geographic areas where the mosquito vectors are found (5). This prediction was realized in December 2013, when local transmission of CHIKV was reported on the Caribbean island of St. Martin (6). CHIKV infection has since spread throughout the Caribbean basin (7) and is now also endemic in Mexico, Central America, and South America and in the Caribbean island nations. In conjunction with this outbreak, 3,490 cases in U.S. residents (from 49 of 50 states) were reported to the CDC during 2014 and 2015; 3,478 cases represented infections acquired during international travel to areas where CHIKV is endemic, whereas 12 cases represented local transmission (8).There is concern within the transplant community that CHIKV could be transmitted from organ and/or tissue donors to recipients. Dengue has become a major public health concern in Cote d'Ivoire since 2010. In malaria endemic countries, such as Cote d'Ivoire, healthcare workers often confuse dengue with other tropical fevers, such as malaria. However, to control dengue fever, healthcare workers must be knowledgeable about this disease. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 healthcare workers' knowledge, attitude, and practices in relation to dengue from 3 rd September, 2014 to 20 th March, 2015 in Abidjan and its suburbs. Logistic analyses with stepwise selection were performed to explain the relationship between the dependent variable (practices) and the main explicative variable (knowledge). The distribution of participant healthcare workers by health facility showed that 55% worked in reference health facilities. Among the 340 participants, 70 (21%) had a good knowledge of dengue fever, while 71 (21%) had good diagnostic practices. The logistical analysis with stepwise selection showed that practices were explained by knowledge (adjusted OR (aOR) = 2.69; p = 0.004), gender (aOR = 1.88; p = 0.036), occupation (aOR = 0.37; p = 0.003) and epidemic risk perception (aOR = 2.59; p = 0.001). The study shows that nurses had better practices in term of dengue diagnosis compared with medical doctors. Similarly, healthcare workers who had good knowledge of dengue fever also had good practices. However, there is a great need for healthcare workers to be trained on how to detect dengue disease.

ObjectiveThis surveillance project aims to increase and broaden coverage ofAedesspp. ovitrap locations in Arizona’s U.S.-Mexico border regionthrough interagency collaboration.IntroductionAs part of a statewide effort to enhance surveillance forAedesspp.mosquitoes (1,2) the Office of Border Health (OBH) took the lead inproviding technical assistance on surveillance in counties borderingMexico. In 2016, OBH sought ways to enhance surveillance in a widergeographic area. Trap locations closer to the border were establishedas a priority, given high amount of traffic across the internationalline, high borderAedesmosquito activity, and native cases of denguereported at the border in Mexico.MethodsThe Arizona Office of Border Health partnered with U.S. Customsand Border Protection to select possible locations for ovitrappingnear the border. Border Patrol Health and Safety Tucson coordinationaccompanied OBH and preparedness staff on three occasions to scoutareas around pre-selected border patrol facilities. County, and borderpatrol staff contributed to trap maintenance. BIDS provided technicalassistance to identify positive traps, collected data for reporting tothe state, and collaborated with experts at the University of Arizonaentomology department to verify results and identifyAedesspp.ResultsOut of 15 border patrol stations within border lands in SantaCruz County, and Cochise County, OBH epidemiologist considered10 viable trapping sites. Two facilities were eventually eliminatedbecause of logistical challenges. OBH visited eight facilities andselected five locations within five miles of the U.S. –Mexicoborder and two located less than 30 miles from the border. OBHepidemiologists inspected sites for potential mosquito habitat and setovitraps low to the ground in areas protected from rain. Some facilitieshad areas of standing water discovered in unused tires, truck-washingstations, heavy-lifting equipment, and natural washes. Border Patrolstaff complained of mosquito activity around some of the stations.After inspection OBH set an average of three traps at each site. Onesite had evidence of mosquito larvae activity.ConclusionsBorder patrol facilities offer ideal trap locations given theirproximity to the international line. Secure facilities offer extraprotection for traps against tampering. The partnership across local,state, tribal, and federal lines allowed Arizona Office of Border Healthto expand surveillance locations, allowing two jurisdictions to set thefirst Aedes-specific traps since Arizona began the 2016 campaign,“Fight the Bite.”
