The Burden Associated with Ocular Symptoms in Allergic Rhinitis

Abstract: Background: Ocular symptoms remain widely neglected while they concern the majority of subjects with allergic rhinitis (AR) and impair their daily activities. We describe the characteristics of ocular symptoms in subjects suffering from AR in the French INSTANT study and their impact on daily activities. Methods: This cross-sectional observational survey was carried out in November 2006 using face-to-face interviews. Results: 31.7% of the population-based sample (n = 4,019) suffered from AR and 52.0% of AR sub… Show more

“…This analysis is pertinent since it is important to show efficacy in patients irrespective of symptom severity. A symptomatic subgroup of patients was defined with rTOSS baseline ≥8 to define patients with at least moderate ocular symptoms, since ocular symptoms are often not quantified even though they affect most subjects with SAR [25]. A reflective total of 5 symptom scores (rT5SS; rTNSS plus ocular itching) and a reflective total of 7 symptom scores (rT7SS; rTNSS plus rTOSS) were also determined, and change from baseline was assessed by the same ANCOVA model, as patients frequently present to clinic with both nasal and ocular symptoms.…”

“…However, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis should not be overlooked. Indeed, in a large survey ocular symptoms among allergic rhinitis patients were triggered by house dust and HDM in 34.8% [130]. The study reported a substantial impact of eye symptoms on daily life.…”

“…In a French, cross-sectional observational survey, 31% of the population-based sample suffered from allergic rhinitis and 52% of patients with allergic rhinitis described ocular symptoms, with 57% of subjects suffering from ocular symptoms for more than 5 years, mostly (92%) during the pollen season [11]. Similarly, a survey on 447 patients with allergic rhinitis revealed that 64% of patients experienced itchy/red eyes, whereas 43% reported watery eyes [12], demonstrating that ocular allergy is part of the burden associated with allergic rhinitis.…”
