A rich and diverse crustacean microcoprolite ichnofauna is reported from the Valanginian of the Mecsek Mts., Hungary. Localities from the Bolondút and Dezsö Rezsö valleys near Zengövárkony (Eastern Mecsek Mts.) provided Favreina aV. dispentochetarius, Palaxius darjaensis, P. triochetarius, P. salataensis, P. tetraochetarius, and P. decaochetarius. They occur in limonitic and partly metasomatized limestones, limestone olistoliths, and ammonite body-chambers. The remarkable richness of this ichnofauna plus the previous records from the same environment (altogether 11 ichnospecies of four ichnogenera from a single stratigraphic level) make it the most diverse crustacean ichnofauna of the Mesozoic. The former ecosystem of the ichnofauna is considered a deeper shallowmarine (water depth <300 m) hydrothermal vent on which the producers of the microcoprolites lived. The related brachiopod fauna shows a remarkable size and is dominated by Lacunosella. This fauna is not similar to typical fossil deepsea vent faunas; however, it oVers a thorough understanding of other fossil shallow-marine hydrothermal vent faunas and the role of crustaceans in these ecosystems. This is the Wrst record of crustacean coprolites from such a fossil site and documents that crustaceans were diverse and played an important role in shallow-marine, non photosynthesisbased ecosystems in the geological past.

Coral bioherms of the Vršatec Limestone that formed massive, several tens of meters thick complexes during the Jurassic were important sources of carbonate production, with carbonate sediment exported to deeper parts of the Pieniny Klippen Basin (Western Carpathians). However, the age of these carbonate factories remains controversial. New analyses of benthic foraminiferal assemblages occurring in coral bioherms and peri-biohermal deposits of the Vršatec Limestone at five sites in the western Pieniny Klippen Belt (Vršatec-Castle, Vršatec-Javorníky, Malé Hradište, Malé Hradište-Kalvária, and Drieňová Hora) show that these sediments were deposited during the Bajocian and were lateral equivalents of crinoidal limestones and breccias, in contrast to previous studies suggesting that they were deposited during the Oxfordian. First, all sites are characterized by similar composition of foraminiferal assemblages on the basis of presence–absence data, although foraminiferal assemblages in biosparitic facies at Vršatec are dominated by miliolids whereas biomicritic facies at Malé Hradište are dominated by the spirillinid Paalzowella. The composition of foraminiferal assemblages does not differ between the lower and upper parts of the Vršatec Limestone. Second, foraminifer species that were assumed to appear for the first time in the Oxfordian already occur in the Middle Jurassic sediments of the northern Tethyan shelf. Third, the first and last appearances of foraminifers documented in other Tethyan regions are in accordance with stratigraphic analyses and ammonoid occurrences, demonstrating that bioherm-forming coral communities developed on the Czorzstyn Ridge during the Bajocian. Several species of foraminifers of the Vršatec Limestone appeared for the first time during the middle or late Aalenian (Labalina occulta, Paalzowella feifeli) and during the Bajocian (Hungarillina lokutiense, Radiospirillina umbonata, Ophthalmidium caucasicum, O. terquemi, O. obscurum, Paalzowella turbinella, Cornuspira tubicomprimata, Nubecularia reicheli) or appeared for the last time in the Bajocian (Tethysiella pilleri) or Early Bathonian (Ophthalmidium caucasicum, O. obscurum). The composition and diversity of communities with benthic foraminifers of the Vršatec Limestone is similar to the composition of foraminiferal communities on carbonate platform environments with corals of the French Jura and Burgundy during the Bajocian.

Mt. Begunj{~ica (Karavanke Mts., northern Slovenia) structurally belongs to the Ko{uta Unit (eastern Southern Alps). The Dachstein Limestone, building the northern side of the mountain and its main ridge, was deposited on the Julian Carbonate Platform, while grey and red nodular Jurassic limestones of the southern slope represent sedimentation on the Julian High. The massive Dachstein Limestone contains a rich assemblage of benthic foraminifera. Typical representatives of the reef and back-reef area were recognized. The age of the assemblage is dated as Rhaetian, based on the co-presence of species with a Norian and Rhaetian time span, such as Galeanella tollmanni, "Sigmoilina" schaeferae, Alpinophragmium perforatum, Aulotortus tumidus, Variostoma catilliforme, Variostoma cochlea and Variostoma helicta, together with the Rhaetian to Lower Jurassic Involutina turgida. Izvle~ekBegunj{~ica (Karavanke, severna Slovenija) strukturno pripada tektonski enoti Ko{uta (vzhodne Južne Alpe). Dachsteinski apnenec, ki gradi severno stran gore in njen vr{ni greben, se je odlagal na Julijski karbonatni platformi, medtem ko sivi plastnati in rde~i gomoljasti jurski apnenci predstavljajo sedimentacijo na Julijskem platoju. Masivni del dachsteinskega apnenca vsebuje {tevilne bento{ke foraminifere, tipi~ne za grebensko in zagrebensko okolje. Na podlagi prisotnosti vrst z norijsko-retijskim razponom kot so Galeanella tollmanni, "Sigmoilina" schaeferae, Alpinophragmium perforatum, Aulotortus tumidus, Variostoma catilliforme, Variostoma cochlea in Variostoma helicta z retijsko do zgodnjejursko vrsto Involutina turgida je združba retijske starosti.
