The Buckling and Post-Buckling of Steel C-Columns in Elevated Temperature

Abstract: This work deals with the investigation of a steel thin-walled C-column subjected to compression due to temperature increase. These experimental studies of the compressed columns in post-buckling state were conducted to determine their load-carrying capacity. To ensure appropriate supports and keeping of columns, plates with grooves were constructed. The tests of the columns' compression for different preloads were carried out. By comparing the experiment results, numerical calculations based on the finite elem… Show more

“…We can imagine a sinusoid as an expansion of an ellipse formed by an intersection of a cylinder by a plane at a certain angle to the axis and passing through the diameter of this cylinder (Fig. 3a) (Czechowski et al, 2020;Kubit et al, 2019). Half of the ellipse circumference is the sinusoid length.…”

“…Buckling is a classic mechanical problem, the concept of which was introduced by Euler (Euler, 1744). Over the years, buckling analysis has found wide application, including in civil engineering (Śledziewski & Górecki, 2020;Toledo et al, 2020), mechanical engineering (Czechowski et al, 2020;Kubit et al, 2019) or the maritime industry (Corigliano et al, 2019;Shen et al, 2020). Currently, there is a renewed interest in buckling, in particular in applications in composite structures (Rozylo et al, 2020;Schilling & Mittelstedt, 2020;Xu & Wu, 2008) or micro and nano technologies (Barretta et al, 2019;Chandra et al, 2020).…”

“…Theoretical approaches involving thermal buckling of functionally graded structures can be found in [24][25][26][27]. Among others, the failure of thin-walled plate structures relied upon theoretical and experimental approach was also analyzed in papers [28][29][30][31][32][33]. These works are strictly associated with phenomenon of stability occurring in thin-walled structures.…”

“…They stated that the temperature with some materials can play huge role on the behaviour of structures. Authors of papers [10,11] studied the load-carrying capacity of compressed thin-walled steel and titanium C-column at temperature up to 200 • C. Zhou et al in paper [12] analysed mechanical properties of CFRP composites at elevated temperature. Authors of work [13] explored the behaviour of GFRP profiles due to compression at elevated temperature.…”
