“…The BNL E821 storage ring [18] will be reused at Fermilab. Following a highly publicized move mostly on water from New York to Illinois of the superconducting coils, and a less-publicized move of hundreds of tons of steel yoke and other components by truck, the storage ring has now been fully re-assembled.…”

“…The method used in the third CERN experiment and the BNL experiment are very similar, save the use of direct muon injection [43] into the storage ring, [44,45] which was developed by the E821 collaboration. These experiments are based on the fact that for a µ > 0 the spin precesses faster than the momentum vector when a muon travels transversely to a magnetic field.…”

“…Superconducting coils, although much more expensive than copper coils, have several advantages which make a high-precision measurement of the magnetic field much more feasible: relative low power requirements, low ripple currents, thermal stability (once cold) and thermal independence of the coils and iron yoke. Four NbTi/Cu superconducting coils, each made of 24 turns, power the magnet: two at an outer radius drive the field across the storage ring gap, and two at inner radius above and below the mid-plane cancel the flux in the ring center and improve the field quality in the gap [49]. The coils are connected in series and operate at a current of 5200 A at a temperature of 4.5 K; the current in the outer and inner coils flows in opposite directions.…”

“…The surface coils, mounted on printed circuit boards, are constructed of 2×120 wires, each separated by 2.5 mm, running azimuthally around the ring [49]. The coils are used to correct the lowest multipoles to tens of ppm.…”
