The mantle plume concept is currently being challenged as an explanation for North Atlantic Igneous Province formation. Alternative models have been suggested, including delamination, meteorite impact, small-scale rift-related convection, and chemical mantle heterogeneities. We review available datasets on uplift, strain localization, age and chemistry of igneous material, and tomography for the North Atlantic Igneous Province, and compare them with predictions from the mantle plume and alternative models. The mantle plume concept is quite successful in explaining formation of the NAIP, but unexplained aspects remain. Delamination and impact models are currently not supported. Rift-related small-scale convection models appear to be able to explain volcanic rifted margin volcanism well. However, the most important problem that non-plume models need to overcome is the continuing, long-lived melt anomaly extending via the Greenland-Faeroe Ridges to Iceland. Mantle heterogeneities, resulting from an ancient subducted slab, are included in plate tectonic models to explain the continuing melt production as an alternative to the mantle plume model, but there are still uncertainties related to this idea that need to be solved.

“…Ar-Ar dates have been published as 59.6 ___ 1.6 Ma for G2 and 59.5 +__ 1.6 Ma for G5 (Evans et al 1973). However, new Ar-Ar determinations for G2 and G4 have given substantially lower ages, 54.9+0.6 and 53.3+0.6 Ma respectively (Thompson et al 1987), a value supported by Rb-Sr dates of 56.3-55.7 Ma for granites G1-4 and 51.5+0.9 Ma for G5 (Gibson et al 1987). The reason for the discrepancy between the earlier and later dates is not understood.…”

S U M M A R Y:The time and duration of igneous activity in the separate component areas of the British Tertiary Igneous Province (BTIP) are investigated using radiometric dates that pass internal consistency tests, used in conjunction with palaeomagnetic polarities and the available stratigraphic information.Reliable results are available only for the currently subaerial parts of the Province. It is found that activity occurred within the approximate interval 63-52 Ma, with most activity at about 59 Ma. Later activity was predominantly of acid magmas though basic rocks preponderate in the province as a whole. The types and span of igneous activity in the separate areas followed no common pattern but areas of more complex geology tend to have had a longer span of activity.Magnetic polarities are predominantly reversed, with all the lavas having this polarity. This predominance is probably largely, but not entirely, due to reversed polarity intervals being longer than normal ones at this time, and with much activity occurring in a single reversed interval. The sequence of polarities found within the BTIP cannot be fully reconciled with the polarity timescales of either Harland et at. (1982) or Berggren et al. (1985).
