The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale

Abstract: This study has focussed on a 10-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) subscale for the quantification of schizophrenic states. Seven psychiatrists interviewed jointly patients who all fulfilled the DSM-III criteria of schizophrenia, and in a subsequent pencil-and-paper procedure a judgment analysis was performed. The reliability analysis showed that less experienced BPRS raters made less consistent judgments implying the cautionary statement that the proper use of a scale for schizophrenia requires specia… Show more

“…Severity of psychopathology was measured with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-Expanded (‘BPRS-E’) [26, 27], which consists of 24 symptoms assessed on a scale from 1 to 7. Items are grouped in four subscales - positive symptoms, negative symptoms, depression and disorganisation [27] - and scored on the basis of observations during the interview and patient self-reports.…”

“…Following the factor structure supported by Kopelowicz and colleagues (18), subscale scores (Positive Symptoms, Negative Symptoms, Agitation/Mania, Depression/Anxiety) were utilized to assess current level of psychopathology. The BPRS is used extensively in psychiatric research and has well-established psychometric properties (16, 19, 20). The Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) ((21) is a 9-item semi-structured interview that assesses depressive symptoms in schizophrenia.…”

“…Assuming that Tr-Int had less communication problems with Tr-Pat, demograpic variables (including a scale for German proficiency), PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [26]), HAM-D (Hamilton Depression Scale [27]) and GAFS (Global Assessment of Function- ing Scale, DSM-IV Axis V [28]) were completed by Tr-Int for all patients. Considering efforts to develop dimensions of the PANSS [29][30][31], the evaluation of the PANSS also included the psychopathological symdromes of schizophrenia [32]. The two research diagnoses as well as the clinical diagnosis, all three according to ICD-10, were then compared for agreement.…”
