The breeding of crop ideotypes

Abstract: Most plant breeding is based on "defect elimination" or "selection for yield". A valuable additional approach is available through the breeding of crop ideotypes, plants with model characteristics known to influence photosynthesis, growth and (in cereals) grain production.
